Is the Linutop an Ultra Mobile PC?

Posted on 29 November 2006 by

Its a PC, and its small. Its a Linutop.

OK, so it hasn’t got a screen or battery power so its nowhere near a UMPC, but its another move in the direction of low power browser-based thin computing. If you coupled it with an external battery pack, a portable 7″ screen, mini keyboard and an external HDD or flash drive, you’d have quite a flexible modular computer. You might find it useful as a carputer or a PC for the kids. Google should brand these and give them out as Christmas presents!

It uses the AMD Geode (I presume LX800) which we already know can provide enough power for most Internet surfing activities and reasonable 2D video performance. Its using a slimmed down Linux and there’s no hard drive included.

According to the Linutop website, there is ordering information coming soon.

So how much do you think it will cost? My guess is $145. Anyone else care to take a pop?

Update: The Register are reporting that the price will be $345. Thats way too expensive. For a similar price, you can buy a Nokia 770 (which includes screen and Wifi) or a 1Ghz VIA Mini-ITX unit.

    Thanks for the tip.

I hope no one ever tells me that the Pepperpad is expensive. For just $300 more you get a complete mobile PC with screen, keyboard, wifi, bluetooth and 20GB drive.

The price is way too expensive.

    Thanks again tho.

    Steve.
