KOHJINSHA SA1F00A UMPC review and U.S. availabilit…

Posted on 11 November 2006 by

PC Watch a Japanese website, have just published a review of the KOHJINSHA SA1F00A UMPC.

Lets take a look at some images first and then see if we can get some meaning out of the translation. Click images to enlarge.

Appears thick. 25mm at the thinnest point.

Screen folded into tablet mode.

User-upgradeable RAM. Good.

QWERTY keyboard.

Here are some points I’ve picked up from the translation.

  • Feels heavy because the size is small. Sufficient quality LED backlit screen.
  • 16.8 mm keyboard pitch
  • Mouse pad is small.
  • 500Mhz AMD LX800. 2.4W TDP, 1.6W Average drain.
  • 2D graphics capability sufficient.
  • Max 1GB DDR333 RAM
  • 2.5″ drive.
  • ON/OFF buttons for WiFi and BT
  • CF card slot is Type 1 only
  • 3in1 media card slot is SDHC and SDIO capable.
  • No DirectX support
  • 5-hour battery life.
  • Cheap price is a ‘big charm.’
  • “we would like us to recommend to the person who searches the mini- note which seriously considered portable characteristic than performance.”

Worlds most efficient notebook PC?

Remember that statement from the Everex NC1500 launch? Its difficult to be 100% sure about this without testing but it looks like the SA1 is even more efficient.

U.S. Availability

As I suspected, Dynamism are right on the case with this one. The base model is being offered with expected delivery in early December for $999. A 1GB upgrade and 80GB drive version is also offered.

It seems quite expensive when comparing it to, say a 10″ Averatec 1020 which has the 1Ghz Celeron and is priced somewhere around $800 now but if you value battery life, small size and weight above performance, there isn’t anything else that compares to the SA1. Plus, you get that cool (non-touch) tablet mode too. 5 hours of sofa heaven!
