Raon Digital Everun. Exclusive preview video.

I feel very privileged to be able to air this introduction video of the Raon Digital Everun that will be on sale next month. Thanks to Raon Digital and a meeting schedule that took them through my neck of the woods I was able to meet up with them, discuss the Everun and take away the device for long-term testing. Not only is this a first showing of the Everun but I believe this is the first time anyone has had an AMD LX900-based device in their hands. A double privilege!

The device you’ll see in the video is a production sample containing a 30GB HDD. Unfortunately there’s some delay in getting the SSD-based version into the production line so I’m guessing there might be some delays on the SSD version being available to customers. That’s a shame of course because for me, one of the appealing features is that, for the first time, you have a consumer-focused ultra mobile PC with an SSD for a price that doesn’t break the bank. The device I’m testing doesn’t have the HSDPA module installed either. I did have the chance to test an HSDPA version today and can report that it supports both data and voice.

The device is an incredible piece of technology. A full PC with thumbboard in a device weighing under 500g. Bluetooth, WiFI, HDD, 4.8″ screen, stereo speakers and and and… You just can not fail to be impressed. But being impressed isn’t quite good enough. The device needs to perform too, in both software and hardware terms and I’m pleased to say that so far, the Everun is not disappointing me. The ONLY thing that annoys me is that it doesn’t have an SD card slot. Apart from that, its positive vibes all the way. Of course there’s a lot more testing and real-world work to be done on it yet before I make any final decision. I want to find out if moving the device between portrait and landscape gets annoying or whether you really can one-thumb the keyboard in landscape mode. There’s also the question of processor performance but my first impressions are that this is one of the best-specified, best-featured and best-priced consumer UMPCs I’ve ever used. It beats the N800 hands-down for me (yes it’s a lot more expensive I know) and knocks the old Raon Digital Vega for six. Its going to make the best sofa-to-car PC, the best holiday PC and the best communications UMPC. Above all that, its stylish. I was very worried about looking like a DHL delivery man with this in my hands but there’s no chance of that. My wife has already said ‘I want one’ and she doesn’t even know what for. I just showed her the auto-rotate function and she was hooked. Its definitely a device that’s going to appeal to women and I’ll take the chance to get out there and ask a few of them as soon as I have the chance!
