The ASUS R50 is a 5.6″ Intel Atom-based ’slate’ UMPC with 3G, GPS and daylight-readable screen. It runs Windows Vista on the 1.3Ghz version of the Intel Silverthorne (Atom) CPU with SSD storage up to 32GB.

The general feeling from JKK and myself was that 1) It was bigger than expected. 2) It was a bit slow (but this is prototype territory remember.) 3) The mouse pointer wasn’t analogue 4) It had a hard touch screen and yet seemed to be targeted for in-car use. 5) The battery life didnt seem to be that impressive but it is certainly a lot better than previous generation UMPC’s.
On the positive side it does have a bright screen and that hard-touch will be nice for those that like inking. Style-wise it looks very nice and with SSD options up to 32Gb, built in 3G and GPS, its got a great specification. I can’t see it coming in at less than $1000 though as it seems to be aimed at the pro’s.
