I wrote some Java software awhile back as part of testing...it provided the current GPS readout as Google Earth KML running on a local web server (which GE is told to refresh every second). Worked pretty well.

The only thing is that the GPS will have to show up in the system as a serial device with a COMM port. If that's true, I could send you a version and you could try it out.

You should really look into Google Earth Plus if you really like GE. The GE community (bbs.keyhole.com) is full of folks who are pretty passionate about exploring the world and will help out with any questions or fiddling with functionality.

One place I would like to mention, although it's not actually software at the moment is http://www.openstreetmap.org
This is a world map created by individuals who wish to contribute and make maps available for anyone to use. Unfortunately you would need to write the software to accompany it.

Try Roadnav (http://roadnav.sourceforge.net). It's not as featured rich as Garmin Mobile PC and it takes longer to recalculate a route, but it works pretty well and you have free maps of all US counties.

GooPs is similar to EarthBridge but a little more feature-rich, though it has a few limitations with the free version...

http://goopstechnologies.com/

Though I have to personally recommend GPSMonitor:

http://www.infixtechnologies.com/products/GPSMonitor/GPSMonitor.php

It integrates with Google Maps and uses alot less memory which makes it great for UMPC's (or in my case, making my pathetic laptop battery last as long as possible). There's even an applet on their site that allows you to try it out without installing - though you do have to stay connected to the internet to use the applet.
