Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta Delayed 48hrs.

Posted on 14 July 2008 by Chippy

The software that could resurrect Windows Mobile devices as acceptable Internet browsing tools is delayed. Or at least the beta is delayed.

Apparently there’s a few bugs they want to iron out before they release the s/w so you won’t be able to download it until Thursday. Its OK by me as the 624Mhz, 4" VGA iPaq 214 that I was going to borrow to test it out hasn’t turned up yet.

I’m waiting eagerly for the test-drive of both the 214 and opera beta; I hope it’s as good as it looks on that video :)

It pretty much brings any PDA into n8*0 territory :)

She says “iPhone experience” to any mobile device, funny how the iPhone is not some unit of measurement!? :)

It doesn’t bring it into N8*0 territory, it absolutely murders it and sends it packing.

Whilst the N8*0 browser is better at flash, the speed of general rendering and moving around a page is painful. In Opera 9.5 it is a joy. On my 5″ VGA PDA browsing is now a very pleasant experience.

Opera is good, but Netfront is faster and overall better on the Ipaq 214.
You should try the actual 3.5 concept version, which has some interface issues but is rock solid.
The opera is better on small screens for his zooming features.

Tip: Disable Javascript on both browsers. 99% the time you won’t need it and it will boost up the speed further.

Oh damn. I’ve been refreshing opera.com today vigorously because my phone’s calendar has been reminding me about Opera Mobile 9.5 beta for last three days. And now I’ll read this old news… Damn Opera! Why do you have to test our faith?!

Is Opera 9.5 more responsive than Opera 8.65? I always find that Opera 8.65 has an annoying tendency to slow the system to a crawl when you’re loading or even moving around a page.

NetFront 3.5 on the other hand is a magnificent piece of software. The text reformatting feature alone makes it far better than Opera 8.65.

I look forward to testing Opera 9.5. Hopefully it’ll work just as well as Opera Mini 4.1

opera 9.5 has nothing in common with 8.65.
It renders much faster (somewhat slower than netfront 3.5) and scrolls very smooth.

I like netfront more as it loac pages quicker and is completely useable one-handed via cursor and keys.

9.5 is MUCH better than 8.65

It scrolls much faster, pages load quicker and it makes browsing the web actually good on a PPC.

    A few small complaints.

    1. Zoom works great, but there in only one zoom level. This is fine most of the time, but there are instances, like trying to zoom in on an image where different levels of zoom would be good. It should zoom in on images to fit them to the screen IMO.

    2. Your notification sounds will be turned OFF in the beta whenever Opera 9.5 is started or quit out of…remember to turn them back on.

    3. Some visual que should be given when you click on a link (maybe the progress bar should show immediatly).

    Other than that its GREAT!!!
