cant comment on the video player except that i know nokia got things messed up on the hardware side thanks to a bandwidth choked display controller. not something that can be fixed in software.

on mail, modest is now default. and i would say its a good improvement on osso-mail, the old client.

btw, if intel is smart, they let nokia do the trailblazing and then move iin to take the glory ;)

moblin for instanced use the gtk based hildon framework. a framework that nokia developed for its tablets iirc.

IMHO that is one of the problems. A "typical" user wants a device that works out of the box. The N810 for example shipped with a completely useless and unstable email client and a lousy video player.

This typical user won't be willing to put up with the sometimes working repository, fire up the command line or continually download patches/updates or reflash the OS every few months.

The Nokia ITs OS is aimed at tech geeks. If it ran the iPod Touch/iPhone OS, sales would have been exponentially higher.

I wouldn't discount the importance of software on MIDs as I think poor software is largely to blame for the failure of Nokia's Internet Tablets.

I think Intel has largely gotten the hardware right (although I think Poulsbo should be have been fabbed on 45nm), so now device manufacturers and software developers will be largely responsible for the success or failure of the MID market.

sound like mids will have the same issue as the netbooks. the software will be what seperates them from each other...

[...] Random Feed wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerpt…starts in a few minutes. People looking a bit tired as its an early start here at the Moscone Centre! I’ll update as we go along….if the Wifi holds up. 0810 - We’re off….Dadi Perlmutter going over highlights of Day 1. We’re waiting for Anand… Interesting that the OQO device is not on the stage today… Anand now on stage. Nice warm-up video. JKKMobile gets quoted in the video! A lot of stats on the screen. Apparently 2:1 prefer full internet. Not suprising. Compal MID on stage. Demo of Gyp [...]
