More U2010 hands-on notes. Fujitsu U820 for the U.S. Market.

Posted on 04 August 2008 by

JKK uncovered something nice on his daily FCC rounds today. The U2010 that seems to be shooting up the UMPCPortal charts (#4 as I write this), is going to be available in the U.S. as the U820. Jkk reports that there doesn’t appear to be any differences in spec apart from an FM transmitter (for in-car audio transmission) and a good-to-see, XP Tablet Edition option. Bravo Fujitsu!

Details: JKKMobile.

Meanwhile, over at the UMPCFever offices, JOE has been doing some more testing with the U2010. He’s completed 2 battery life tests which proce that it’s running more efficiently than the SC3, the other Menlow-based laptop-style UMPC. Playing a movie with 50% brightness, Wifi on and power saving mode returned 2hrs and 30 minutes. 3hrs browsing might be a little difficult to achieve at 50% brightness but it’s going to be very close. Is it going to be enough for people though? Joe continues testing and promises some CrystalMark results tomorrow where we’ll probably get a good feel for disk speed; another important factor.

Specs for the U2010 are available here.

Now if they could just somehow get that expected price down a little

Does it have a GPS module?

This thing is too cool. Quite an improvement over the 810 (even lighter yay!). Too bad they couldn’t fit in 2 GB of ram, but other than that, WOW. A laptop small enough to hold in bed at night like a book and carry on the motorcyle with room to spare. Incredible.

will buy this and a cf tv tuner :)
to bad for the solderd ram…

If you don’t run Vista, you don’t need 2GB. Why anyone wants Vista is beyond me.

My Libretto had been my bed/main PC for 10 years and I have not found an alternative. Mouse and buttons at the right side on top of the keyboard, so the laptop can be fully opened, stand up on my chest and I use just one hand to hold and operate it. Finally this U820 suites this need. I expect it to be my only PC ever for the next 10 years like the Libretto did for me. The OQO is not so productive and not ideal for bed, the IBM X20 is too large to carry around. This U820 should be able to replace these two. Finally there’s a company has got an UMPC done right after 10 years since the legendary Libretto.

Vista has advanced battery features, and after using XP Tablet Version (P1510D) and Vista Business (U810), I can already say that Vista is not slow (when using the Basic appearance) and has nicer features for touch-screen, go check the differences via google. Vista is always given a bad rap when it comes to laptops, but that’s just the point of view of the ignorant (ignoring the readily available knowledge and fact; as opposed to conjecture, false-knowledge).

The U820 probably won’t have a gps module. At least the manual for it that the fcc posted does not mention anything about GPS. After it’s initial release there probably will eventually be a model with the gps but cost $$$ more. IT does have a FM transmitter for streaming music to your car radio wich I thought was cool. I don’t understand why Fujitsu did not opt for another gig of ram though. That was pretty dunb IMO. An FM transmitter and GPS are cool additions but what about doing something for the performanc? The one thing most people that have the U810 complain about. Vista is far superior to XP but definitely needs 2GB minimum. So I can’t blame people in cases like this for bashing Vista. But it’s not Microsoft’s fault that the PC manufacturers don’t produce equipment that will handle the load.
Hopefully the twice as fast CPU will compensate some for lack of ram. And hopefully the card readers will have better performace to be able to use ReadyBoost without it hindering performance.
