I really like the idea of a ultra small laptop that can run VMs at a decent speed. Since battery life compares pretty much with other large laptops with the same performance that’s not a big issue. Everything else is a bonus.

Vista is supported by the device. So you could install it yourself or make it install by the reseller in the worst case.

Well the manual seems to say that the device cannot do that. Simply clamshell.

Someone was saying that it opens all the way back onto itself so that it has a “tablet like mode”… we shall see with the reviews.

Well since there is no place to put a decent touchpad, touchscreen seems to be the least they could do.

By the way, we all saw how chippy was fond of touchscreen while the live review of the Gigabyte M912, even in “notebook mode”. JKK is the same, too, by putting touchscreen on every netbook he touches

The fact is that a touchscreen is useful.

Concerning the lack of rotating screen, well, I would say that if the device is compact and light enough, it is not a big issue. And this one seems especially compact and is relatively light.

I’m ready to bet that using this babe one-handed would be more comfortable than the Gigabyte M912 is tablet mode, because the M912 is quite heavy.

Finally, rotating screen is a very costy feature:
* in weight: needs a swivelling hinge, can be quite heavy especially if you want something durable
* in size: same reason
* in price: swivelling display is patented, while clamshell device is not; and of course again a swivelling hinge is costier
* in ergonomy: leds and buttons shall be usable in both notebook mode and tablet mode
* in durability: convertible devices are well known for their poor durability compared to clamshell or “brick” devices, because of the hinge of course… It is by definition unavoidable!

So in the end, while I’m fond of convertible devices like you obviously are too, there is a lot of drawbacks that forbids me from laughing at anything that cannot be used as a tablet.

Like everybody here I’m looking forward to UMPC Portal future tests of this little beauty!!!

this is the most sophisticated small ruggedized computer ever made and will sell millions by 2008. i’ve seen the yippy (everun) work and it is truly awesome.

Chippy, you are right about this being an excellent PMP however I wish that it had a DVI or HDMI out for 1:1 mapping to 1080P plasma,proj or LCD. However your spec database indicated expresscard capability which would allow for external graphics, please can you confirm this as I belive it may be a mixup with the internal PCI-express ?

Also I am sure the market would benefit from a USB to AV video(tv) adaptor, have you ever heard of one ? I have seen many USB to VGA or DVI adaptors and you can convert vga to composite video with a framebuffer but it seems noone is offering this cpaability, seems a shame that there is not an easy way to output movies or video onto a friends or hotel TV screen etc……
I am trying to stream from my fuji u2010 to my touchpro’s tv out atm but only have limited success.

Can’t wait to see UMPCportal put this one thru it’s paces. Of course, battery life will be a prime interest. The price, for some, might be a bit higher than expected, but for the horsepower in this netbook, and how portable it is, it might be worth it (we really want to see how it fits into a) pants pocket, b) pocketbook (typical wife pocketbook), and how quick the boot times are. The gamers will want to see the games of course (as this netbook will be the best at that as well maybe).
