Check out this thread on HPCFactor forums....long thread...

http://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=8402&start=316&posts=325

or you can go straight here for GPE version:

http://hostwork.com/users/matt/j720/

or his other IceWm version here:

http://freeshells.ch/~wicked74/j720/icewm720/

This is very easy as it's pre-built image file with all the apps installed....

Oh that's something I never tried!
I had the 680 and 728 too.
That was serving me so well for so long!

What linux are you able to run on the Jornada? This sounds interesting :)

I'm still using a Jornada 720 that I bought in 2001! That Atari looks like its dad. Progress in the intervening years has been in screen quality and wireless connectivity, not form factor. Sometimes I wonder if any of the manufacturers actually try to do business with the products they build. Most of them seem like toys to me.

I understand that not everyone will need video (or even voice) over Skype but my point is that it IS a compromise with these mobile devices.

Skype says you need a 1GHz processor for Video and Voice
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/windows/

Though typically less than indicated by Skype works ok.

Skype voice has been used successfully on the AIGO MID already.

Well for me Skype is not an issue, I rearly use it and when I do voice is enough.
Also to use video over skype, you really need good enough hardware, for instance even though Everun runs WinXP there is no way video would work on 500Mhz CPU and I'm not sure how good Skype works on Intel MIDs?

Can you tell me more of what this enables you to do?

You know after have mentioned the Nokia Communiators myself above I got to thinking if Nokia would put their tablet experience together with their Communicator experience and used a processor that would enable to run say XP like on these MIDs :) or more fuller Linux, you could have a deal breaker, since these Nokias are well built and very compact.

I really feel the Nokia E90 COULD be the ideal MID form factor http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/19024-Aigo-MID-vs-oqo-02-vs-Nokia-E90
I even feel one could be able to squeeze in 5" screen onto the form factor.

Sorry if I've taken the MID topic into a smartphone, frankly though I'm actually talking about size and form factor, for now the E90 doesn't offer me anything as it is, nor the tablets, but this full Linux OS does open my eyes and ears :)

I was originally very excited by the MID category because my Nokia N800 Internet Tablet had a few discouraging limitations. However, some very smart people on the Internettablettalk forums have a full version of Debian Linux working on the tablets. The combination of Nokia's hardware with a full working Linux desktop actually exceeds my hopes for any MID's.

I feel it is very ironic that 20 YEARS ago yes in the youth of personal computer a pocketable computing device was closer to its desktop counterpart both when it comes to input (keyboard) and computing power. There is nothing that comes close to this today when it comes to size keyboard and battery time!

Why would a 4" screen make the device unpocketable? The AIGO MID and even the OQO are pocketable althought maybe not very easy so in the OQO case.

High res screens don't need that much battery power, the AIGO is decent on battery in fact.

Well there are actually ideas or devices out there that could put an MID and phone into one frankly, look at the Nokia Communicators for one those exist and are on the market and have been for many years now, and here I go once again how about this MID in the original iPod size
http://www.engadget.com/media/2006/02/apple_tablet.jpg
Yes that is an imaginary product but I feel personally that it could be done, perhaps this new "one piece aluminum production" Apple has implemented might open up new doors in the MID/UMPC category?

Now will future MIDs have phones builtin also or will future Smartphones be as much an MID that time will show, it's obvious that at some point the two will merge to some degree, but then again my homephone (oh that's right I don't even have one only a Skype Philips phone :)) and my home computer are not one and the same device. Nor is my TV a computer (though it has one hooked up to it) nor are there any offroad and sportscar in one that are good on both territories. I think that when you merge devices you make a compromise on both (or more) fronts. Take the multipurpose printer/scanner/faxes, none of them are really great printers or scanners when it comes to performance or speed. The best I found was a Brother color laser but it costed around $700 and came in a box big enough for me to fit in, for that money I could have def gotten a better printer AND better scanner, the fax I don't use anyhow. So I think we will be carrying multiple devices for quite some time still.

So close to being a decent MID (that at least meets my expectations of what a MID is!)

For me a MID is something that can run a full internet experience browser, let's me POP my email and is a good PMP.

I can live without a full OS, but I'm certainly not against it!

I agree on the screen size being too small and that 5" is ideal for MIDs. But one thing I will say, solutions suzh as the zoom feature on the iPhone actually doesn get around the "too small for interenet sreen" syndrome quite nicely. Takes time to get used to it, but I have to say I've been amazed at how well visible it is even for older people wen I want to show them something. I'm talking ppl in the age that they have no clue about gadgets in general.
