Yes, welcome to the 8-day, 8-device, 4-person MID Moves tour website.
The MID Moves project is an event designed to highlight how mobile Internet and Mobile Internet Devices bring you the power of the full Internet and the full Web in a way that enables you to go mobile while remaining productive, able to communicate, able to locate yourself and your contacts and even allowing you to have some fun on the way.
Each of the team will be taking two or more Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices on a fun and exciting 4-day tour and using this website, social networking and other internet media tools, bringing the whole event to you; update-by-update, picture-by-picture-by-picture and inevitably, problem-by-problem. A veritable Web2.0-fest!
Before the event starts though, we need to do our research. We need to find out what tools work efficiently both for the user and for other tools along the communications chain. Between the middle of December and the middle of October we’ll be analysing such tools at Twitter, Friendfeed, YouTube, Flickr, Wordpress, iPoki and many others. We’ll be looking for your input too. We’ll also be working out best way to use our devices, getting ourselves acquainted with the best mobile computing tips and putting together the all important mobile computing kit list. It’s not just a matter of throwing a laptop and a DSLR into a bag!
The MID Moves team should have no problem with all this though. Each member brings a set of skills that will be valuable to the project.
Chippy of UMPCPortal will be doing his best to set the website up and arrange the distribution of devices. He’ll also be working hard over Christmas testing as many mobile internet tools as possible. He’s been tracking the MID and ultra mobile computing scene for nearly three years.
Jenn Lee of Pocketables will be bringing her experience with, of course, pocketable gadgets. She’s bought more pocketable devices in the last few years than anyone wold consider healthy! She’s also taking her husband along to help with the photography so expect some top-notch posts on the Flickr group.
Ewan Spence brings a lot of experience with smartphones, podcasting and mobility. “I am known for my strong views on mobile technology and ensuring accessibility to all” he says in his blog. It will be interesting so see how he positions MID’s against the smartphones that he’s more often associated with!
Nicole Simon is the Web expert among us. She blogs at Cruel to be Kind about everything web, web2.0 and the web beyond that. She’s written a book about twitter and has a lot of knowledge about the tools and methods available to keep everyone updated. Team, friends, followers and visitors.

The website has been designed to allow us to bring short-form and long-form posts to you with and without media. On the left, you’ll find the team-stream which is a microblog of everything that’s happening. It’s updated every five minutes. In the middle, you’ll see tabs for each of the team members. Under those tabs you’ll find all the details and posts, location and itinerary for each member. Under the tabs you’ll find all articles in the traditional ‘blog’ format. We’ve taken care to highlight conversations in this part of the blog so underneath the current article you’ll find all the comments. Join in when you feel like it. Thanks to Wordpress.org version 2.7, threaded comments allow comments to turn into conversations.
That is, latest article at the top.On the right we’ll run media. Images, videos and podcasts.
As the site develops though, as users give feedback, we might choose to omptimise the site. We have chosen not to include a forum as we expect the conversations to happen in other places but if you wish to post a question or even an article, image or video, we want to feature it. We’re going to investigate the easiest (and most spam-free!) way to do this. We’re even thinking about opening up the site for other members so if you have something to say about mobile internet and mobile computing, you’ve got your chance.
The tour ‘window’ starts on the 19th of Jan 2009, just five weeks away from the data of this posting. The window is 8-days long and during that time we’ll be kicking off our tours. The itinerarys aren’t finalised yet but we’ll let you know as soon as they are. Planes, trains, automobiles. Conferences, boats and even, we’ve heard, a few blogging firsts!
So what about the devices? The truth is that we don’t know what devices we’re getting yet. Intel, our sponsors are working on this and can’t release the full list until closer to the event. We’re expecting one or two nice surprises so of course, we’re more than happy to wait!!!
Until then, we’ll be discussing the tools, method, kit-lists and tours. Your input and feedback is more than welcome so if you’ve got some thoughts or questions either contact us here or, if you’ve had some experience that you’d like to share, join the site, submit a short article and we’ll consider putting it up on the site.

This sounds great. I only hope that, in addition to the topics you list, you will try out inking on the MIDs. I realize you will be pressed for time and, probably overwhelmed with suggestions but if you could try inking with a stylus, I for one would appreciate it.
I realize that not all of the MIDs may have the same inking capabilities, but their lack of capabilities would also be useful to know. As an example, if the MID runs Vista you could:
1) Use the TIP to input text into Notepad and
2) Copy the text into Journal and mark it up.
Thanks. Have fun. And I’m jealous.
