The Sony Vaio P [Portal page] was a big deal at this year’s CES. Sony teased us with visions of a computer that would fit in our pocket. While the device is certainly small, I don’t think it is a realistic pocket machine (even the flash ad on sony.jp seems to agree). My three year old Sony Vaio UX [Portal page] is more pocketable, which is why I was somewhat baffled when they released the P which isn’t even close by comparison. Here are several pictures from Engadget China poking fun at the pocketability of the Vaio P that I chortled at. I find the one with the desktop to be particularly funny. First shot is official from Sony of course.

To recap from the meetup chat this CES weekend:
1) When Sony created its first transistor radio, it sent out its salesmen to stores with custom shirts that had pockets larger than usual, so the salesmen could sell the radio as being “pocketable.”
2) Someone told me you need “Sony jeans” for this! HA!
I still want to fondle it! Now I must pop over to jkk to see if he got his yet!

Well it’ll certainly fit in my coat pocket … which in the dim dark past was made just the right size to fit my Toshiba Libretto 100CT
I had a peek at one at the local Yodobashi Camera store, it is very very neat (but I still prefer the Everun Note if only because it’s a darn sight cheaper) … and yes pictures of the Vaio almost inside the pocket (so almost but not quite the same as the first pic in the post) are all over the local subway trains.

Its 1-2 inches too wide in my opinion but I’ll give them credit for adding a proper keyboard and screen resolution to what is the replacement for the U series. Also they’ve addressed the height of the device by taking off the touchpad. That move has at least opened up possibility of making the device jacket pocketable.

Why doesn’t Sony and other companies get a clue. When the create anything with a touch type keyboard people are interested yet everyone has dreamed of and wants that touch type keyboard in a narrown enough size to carry everywhere.
What Sony should do is make that thing 4″ wide and make it say 7″ to 7.5″ long; that would be what more people would want and buy. That current design is still too big to fit in any pocket so why get it? If you are going to need a bag anyways, I’d rather get something larger. Yet if there was a device 7″ x 4″ x 1″ I’d pay a premium for that if it had a good keyboard.
It seems that this years CES show still proves companies have no clue what we want.
