A new standard was needed because SDHC was limited has an artifical limit at 32Gb. (Even if practically it could have gone higher.) I beleive the reason for this 32Gb limit was because FAT32 isn't well adapter to large capacities. The new SDXC adds exFAT/FAT64 adds support file system.
