Sony Vaio P watch out! Viliv S7 official specs.

Posted on 09 January 2009, Last updated on 11 November 2019 by

The Viliv S7 has been in the pipeline for a while now and is way up there on my personal ‘watchlist.’ We heard that the S7 would be on display at CES so thanks to some group digging (hat tip to the great bunch of people in the live chat room as I type) we’ve found the official info. There’s a couple of nice pics there too. Strange perspective but you get the idea….tasty! Far nicer than the ‘raw’ version I saw, but still enjoyed, at the Intel Developer Forum last year.

Specs are pretty much as we already have in the database. (Note: S7, S5 and X70 Atom promo info is on the myviliv website.)

Some interpretation is probably worthwhile here. 200 hours standby means you can leave it by your bed in standby for a few days and just fire it up in 5 seconds. 7 hours continuous movie playback would equate to about 5 hrs online web browsing. ‘Blueray HD Video Playback’ refers to the hardware video decoding capabilities of the Poulsblo / ICH chipset. It can handle 1080p (with the right software.) The keyboard I tried was excelent quality. 800gm means it’s possible to hold it in one hand as a ‘reader’ and the ‘Multi-io’ means you get access to a number of ports (vga, ethernet etc.) on a breakout cable.

Here’s the gallery from my hands-on at IDF and I’ve embedded the hands-on video below.

Definitely one to look out for. Any idea of the cost? It must be pretty competitive to compete with the one from Sony, a company with already a big name or any company out there who has a netbook. Very promising though. Love the design.

  2. DavidC1 says:

It will be cheaper because its a Korean manufacturer. I’ve heard of $999 pricing I think, which is really good looking at the specs.

Plus, it will use Windows XP, not the bloated Vista.

  3. Chippy says:

Yeah, under $1000 is the target here. I suspect 900-1200 range.
I’m in good contact with Viliv so stay tuned!

  4. Paquito Edpalina says:

    Dear David,

Pls give me the company’s website. Do you have an idea whether we can customize the unit and purchase it online?

    Thank you!

    Pax E.

  5. Josh says:

    Hey David,
In Korea, the prices will start from around 729,000won, which is converted to around 700 US dollars, so it is unexpectedly cheap, but i have good news and bad news~! Viliv is currently manufacturing a Viliv S7 that can be upgradedto Vista or 7, its just that it’ll be much more,MUCHH more expensive, probably goes over 1000 US dollars,so I want the Vista/7 model which is to come out l8r on, its just really expensive, similar situation with the viliv x70ex which hasnt ben released in korea tho.

  6. Brett says:

nice looking PC, do you know if they are made by Inventec ?

(the guys that make the Kohjinshas and the Toshiba netbook)

  7. DavidC1 says:

No, Viliv is the name of the company, which is in Korea and originally made only PMPs(Portable Music Players).

  8. Chippy says:

I think Yukyung is the name of the company. Viliv is a brand but yes, you’re right, they design their own devices.

  9. PP says:

around 999$ for the 1.3 or 1.8 processor?

and is it possible to have 2g of ram?

I want to use it mostly for live music (with MIDI keyboard)

    thanks

  10. Mark says:

If it is really $999, how is it better than the Vaio P at $899?

  11. UMPCman says:

XP will definitely give this device a 1-up on the VAIO.

I wonder whether Windows 7 will make that moot, though.

  12. Young says:

As I heard, it could be around 7XX$ something to compepte with VAIO P.
Definitely Z520 based. If it goes up to 1.8G, it cost higher than

  13. GeoffreyM says:

I don’t see a pointing device. Is the expectation that the touch screen will replace any built-in pointing device like a trackpad? I can’t say that appeals to me in a clamshell form factor.

  14. chippy says:

Its top right on the keyboard. The indicator lights are integrated behind it.
Its a good place to have it imo.

    Steve.

  15. GeoffreyM says:

I see. I was wondering if that might be it. Thanks.

  16. turn.self.off says:

i just noticed something in your video, chippy, did they actually put the camera into the bottom of the device, so that one can use it as a large “compact” camera when in tablet mode?

still, sounds a bit to pricy for me, to bad…

  17. chippy says:

Not as far as I can remember. Ill have to check it out to make sure though. INteresting because I think they were talking about having a 3.2mp cam.

    Steve

  18. turn.self.off says:

top left corner, about a min into the video.

there is a black area. i guess it could be some kind of latch, but its a weird place to put it given that the battery is in the other end.

hmm, letting the video play a bit more, the white square catches the light a bit different, making it look like a flash of some sort.

  19. Vampirecat says:

    If you check your gallery:
    http://www.umpcportal.com/gallery/v/VilivS7/IMG_7208.JPG.html
The black area has text that reads “3.0” and the smaller text under that could be “MEGAPIXELS”

    I like the design.

  20. chhh says:

i think with a price tag of 1k$ it’ll be difficult to compete with asus t91 (which has similar specs, but has no broadband wireless, but has a led backlit screen.. is this one led backlit as well?)

  21. reverendo says:

    definitely a very interesting device…
it probably has a soft touchscreen, doesn’t it, Chippy?
how can expect the 1,86 Ghz processor to perform comparing to the P1610? Can anyone help me out on this one?
    thanks a lot in advance

  22. South Korean says:

Yukyung is the original name of company, and viliv is a brand name.

And, pmp is abbreviation of Portable Media Player; which can play various codec movies, not even musics, has 4~5inch LCD.

Most of all, S7’s price won’t be over $800 definitely. Don’t worry. I heard it from ma friend in Viliv mania club. :)

    Official Announcement about Viliv S7:
Hi, I live in Korea, and I check the korean Viliv site much often and ask YuKyung questions often, and I’ve come to find out tha S7’s prices will start around $700! YuKyung is also making a Vista/7 upgrade-able version which will be released much later, but sadly, the price for the Vista/7 model will go over a thousnad dollars. I know, I’m pretty upset about the price.

  30. Warren S. Stinson says:

Only thing is that Feb is a shorter month that March. If you look at Neilsen’s info for Feb vs. Jan, you will see roughly the same in reverse.. Still good news.
