The tech world is practically in a state of euphoria because of the new Vaio P, and its not hard to see why. Its an amazing looking small netbook, with quality components and features. What more do you need? The size comes with drawbacks however. While Sony is boasting 4 hours battery life which practically every news site around the world has relayed, these battery estimates are never accurate. While it may be in theory possible to squeeze that amount of processing out of the device it wont be under “optimal” conditions. I just received an email from Dynamism announcing that the device is up and ready to be ordered on their site and they add further confirmation to this: “The integrated battery has an optimal 4-hour runtime (2.5 hours under normal use).” I for one actually expected a bit better from Sony, but we will still have to wait for some reviews. Bonus points to Dynamism for being honest though.

Again, where is Pixel Qi with 5 fold increase in battery with that new Pixel Qi Paper White, integrated touch, direct sunlight readable & long battery life screen?

There is an extended battery that lasts 8 hours according to the sony website

As for buying the OQO instead I see the thinking behind that but to be fair I don’t really see how there would be a tossup even between the two, I mean for me they don’t even compete with each other the Vaio seems to be aiming at those who have been happy with the netbook sized devices but perhaps wanted a more quality built product and why not a bit sleeker which the Sony most def is! Is it for me? Of at this point, but I can’t say that I won’t sell my EEEs at some point in the favor of the P, since to me it does def offer great mobility in a great size, however by the time I’d be ready to do that (6mos-1yr from now) I’m sure some other company has matched or outdone this design, for instance the Asus sliding keyboard design idea COULD somehow enable this size but with a trackpad, which is something I miss.
As a side note the Intel booth at CES (which did NOT btw have the Vaio) had the UMPCs/MIDs in one row and the netbooks in another (I’m talking about the ones that were out there to be tested not the ones behind the glass), and every time I went by there 3-4 times during friday, the netbook row was overwealmingly visited by women while the first row (UMPC/MID) had the “guys” around them, the people who either didn’t know that much about them but were appealed bythe size and then the others who generally knew more about the devices than the Intel reps
the reps would at times even have some of “us UMPC-fans” sorta help out in explaining to the novices what this or that product was or what improvements it had, anyhow point being I strongly feel the Vaio P might have the same type of appeal as we saw at the Netbook side of the Intel booth!
