Completely understand what your stance in this matter. Although I would disagree on some of the finer details, I think you did an awesome job explaining it. Sure beats having to research it on my own. Thanks

Wow, how fast time goes by. I didn't even realize it had been 3 years already. When Matt and I first started origamiportal.com we had been talking for awhile about the current small linux devices that existed and whether one of us was going to buy one. When we saw the news about what the origami was we thought it would be neat to start a site about something we were interested in.

Obviously we were not as knowledgeable as chippy has been and I'm glad to see how great this site has become from what we had originally created.

The best thing I remember was when they showed the site on a television show in the UK. I'd never had something I'd created mentioned on TV and it made me feel like a giddy school girl.

Anyhow sorry Monk and Kevin Tofel for not crediting you on that first post. You guys were a great source of news and info and it was cool to see how the news broke between all of the different UMPC sites.

Keep up the great work Chippy!

3 years of low demand/sales and they still do not understand that for a real computer running full Windows a keyboard is needed? duh I am still hoping for a origami computer that can fold like the name implies so I can carry it in a coat pocket but when unfolded provides the same basic design of a laptop. I am ok with a screen 5-8" in size but really without a keyboard they are just toys.

3 years and still not quite there. The Viliv S5 is nearly there. In fact as you stated it is almost the same as the original concept (only better.) However like Al and others, I am waiting for the complete UMPC (with keyboard built-in).
Here's to the next few years!

Lol, and I still want that "Haiku" device form factor with an active digitizer and a touch screen as well.

“Ultra-Mobile PCs can be used with USB or Bluetooth keyboards, and I expect keyboard peripherals to be a very popular accessory.”

That is not what people want to me. They want a touch type keyboard that is built. I think many like myself hoped that these computers would resemble the name ultra mobile, meaning small enough to carry in a large coat pocket. I think those two issues are why they have done so poorly in sales, the lack of a built in touch type keyboard and being a size while smaller than a laptop is still too large to prevent needing a computer bag just like any other computer.

Great post and what a wild ride it's been. I will NEVER forget that day for so many reasons. Partially because my little personal blog saw well over 250,000 PVs in less than a handful of hours! Have to say that one of my most memorable experiences out of the last three years was meeting Otto Berkes at CES 2008. Great vision and a nice guy.

Great history on where we started Steve. It is nice to take a look back once and a while. Here is to a bright future in our mobile tech sector!

Great Post - How time flies! I remember being pretty stunned when Origami was teased as it seemed to be exactly what you'd want in a mobile lifestyle device. Amazing that we've yet to see this really creep past the niche market - though netbooks are certainly coming into the mainstream quite nicely now.
