HTC Just announced the HTC Touch Pro 2, a Windows Mobile slide/tilt device that many readers at UMPCPortal are going to be interested in. It’s still using the ‘old’ (or maybe I should say ‘current’) processing platform which is a little disappointing but the big battery, big 3.6″ screen and keyboard make it a good productivity option. Note the ‘zoom-bar’ specification which could help a lot in navigating websites. looking at the WCDMA talk time figures gives a good idea of how long it will last in ‘MID’ usage scenarios. About 4hrs.

The press release also mentions ‘Push Internet’. “HTC Push Internet alleviates slow downloading and rendering of Web pages on a mobile phone. Users can preselect their favorite Websites to get immediate access to them when needed.” Its sounds like some sort of background downloading service. Also note the lack of 3.5mm headphone socket. This is a very business-focused device.

No pricing info has been announced but you can estimate a price in the 600 Euro bracket. Availability in Europe is ‘Early Q2.’ putting it just ahead of the N97 timeframe in Europe.  (Nokia said the N97 would be available in June in their updates at MWC today.)

The specs, however nice, really don’t matter until Microsoft come out with a better version of Windows Mobile. We’re still not going to see the full internet experience on it and it’s still going to be clunkier to use than an iPhone.

  3. Christian Kurz says:

Thats it. Though this device is everything the Kaiser was meant to be from the start. But by now, i am no more interested in arm-based devices. If this would be powered by an atom and imcorporate a slightly larger screen (4,1″) this would be my dream.

  4. alese says:

I like it. And as a phone the ARM CPU is just fine, better battery life than Intel Atom in smaller package. Sure it won’t have FIE, but for quick on the go internet it’s going to be OK.
Also regardless of what people think about Windows Mobile it’s still a good OS for phone use – I guess easily better than some “Linux Phone” distribution on a Intel MID device, yes it’s not as good as iPhone but I think for being productive in a business environment this one is a much better solution then iPhone.

  5. Joao Oliveira says:

ery nice. I’m a bit tired of windows mobile devices but this one looks very promising.

One down side is that is supposed to ship with windows mobile 6.1 not 6.5? HTC Touch HD was already a big improvement over the touch diamond and touch pro which were probably the worst devices htc ever launched in years, so lets hope improvements continue….

  6. Kenneth says:

Apart from the dedicated keys for numbers, almost the same spec as the Sony Xperia X1…

  7. Marc G says:

Much bigger screen too. That 0.6 inch makes a surprisingly big difference….

  8. animatio says:

put opera or fenec on it and internet surfing will be acceptable at this resolution. i’d say one of the smallest mid form factors yet.
install softmaker office 2008 and you have a full office suite on it too.
and install xnview for graphics ….

HTC just announced at the Windows press conference that Touch Pro2 and Diamond2 will have free upgrade to WM 6.5.

I’m confused. Palm Pre and Toshiba TG01 are launching with next-gen processors in H1 2009, why nothing next-gen from HTC?

  11. Brent212 says:

No camera flash and no 3.5 mm jack? Fail.

  12. BH Loo says:

No flash light for the camera? Major fall back!!!

  13. dave says:

No flash for camera = joke , Right off the bat no flash means touch pro 1 is better, i don’t want a bigger phone the touch pro 1 is just the right size

  14. Stefan Playford says:

I just ditched my Incite for your Tilt 2 (AT&T) All I can say is WOW this is a better phone! I see lots of messages here regarding the TP2, is this a different phone completely, or is it just the Verizon version of the same phone with slightly different interface? Was there a Tilt 1? I am trying to get accessories and want to make sure I don’t buy the wrong stuff.

  15. Rasheeda Davanzo says:

1 day old TP2 and having some adjustment shock. I will seem completely thru this web page, however it is so various from my q and my palm 800 which were each largely the same. At this time the only issue I truly recognize is the best way to access world wide web ( that is why I bought it ) Creating calls recieving messages is more challenging, moving pictures to TP@ so I can use it as being a viewer looks impossible. I can move them but i want them being quickly uncovered around the device. Studying curve I hope is all.
