Viliv S5 is top of the charts!

Posted on 16 February 2009 by Chippy

I’m looking at something I haven’t seen for a long long time here. A UMPC is number 1 on the product portal rankings. This hasn’t happened since the netbooks took over from the HTC Shift as the #1 viewed device in mid-2008. Not only do we have the Viliv S5 at #1 but there’s another UMPC at #3. The UMID M1.

Viliv S5 popularity graph. (Updated daily)

Lets hope that when we finally get to test them, they stay high in the charts! You can check daily rankings here and on the graph in each product page.

MID with XP one of the reasons? Maybe battery life too?

I dont know what it takes to Intel to realize we want full OS and battery life on MIDS.

What do I want a MID for?
    50% Browsing
    20% Communication
    20% Video
    10% other stuff (office, coding)
A MID isn`t really for working (heavy use of office or software development) or gaming (controls are just awfull).
So I personally don`t see the need for windows on a MID. A touch friendly linux distribution that can be easily upgraded with new software would imho be completely sufficient. Unfortunately all linux dirstributions for netbooks or mids are far from perfect at the moment…

Well…if Korea’s MID market gets expanded, more Korean manufacturers will develop MIDs with WinXP or Win7 OS to convince local customers since ActiveX isn’t supported on other OS. In this case, Intel cannot push forward Linux or Moblin OS. Even they announced co-work on Moorestown MID with LG, I’m sure that LG MID will be loaded with Windows OS if they released it to Korea. MID with Full OS will be available in Korea all the time, what you need is just find a right friend or e-shop to hand over to you those MIDs. ;)

Do people still use ActiveX in Korea? It’s such an unsafe technology that it’s been abandoned in most places.

Don’t be such a Linux hater… Linux can do more that M$’s virus ridden filth of an OS (dare I even call it an OS?!?!?). You can’t run a 3D desktop on a MID without running it with Linux and Compiz.

Compare LinuxMCE with WindozeMCE if you don’t believe me.

I used to be a big M@ fan before they started requiring activation and acting so big-brother-ish… Now they can die the slow withering death that comes from competing with a product that is free… (in all senses of the word).

Active X does what besides allow control over your machine to someone else?!?!?

That’s one reason I’m using my Aigo P8860 with Win XP. If this gets released I sure will be looking at getting one. One of the biggest is the battery life. If the battery life is around 4 hours of real time use, that’s a start along with a full OS. The MID’s are great for when your on the go and don’t want to bring along your Netbook. I really like the size of the Aigo P8860 because you can put in back pocket, or coat pocket, and yet its not to big.

My current COWON A3 works like a charm however MKV and OGM is a pain. Need to extract the subs and re-edit.

This machine would play video files like a PC
