Thank you for the eye candy! I am obsessed with the s5 as I continue to get my daily dose of unboxings, reviews, and anything viliv s5esque (even things that I have seen before). I can’t wait to get my paws on a premium… Where can I get one of these today/ Pleeeeease!

The missing microphone or a mic-in-port costs some sympathy though

  3. Mike W says:

    Hello Chippy,

Thank you for uploading the eye candy. I am very interested in this unit and I am anxiously awaiting the US release near the end of April (hopefully)

I was wondering if you have tried to play .mkv 720p or .mkv 1080p files yet? I have seen a video of someone playing both resolutions just fine. I would like a second verification. I have yet been able to find a portable unit that can in fact play these without stutter.

So I don’t get blasted by why would you want it to be compatible when it can’t support that resolution. Almost my whole video library is made up of .mkv 720p and .mkv 1080p.

    Thank You.

    Chippy Reply:

its difficult to define 720 and 1080p.
MKV is a container, not a codec format (my knowledge)

MPEG4 (xvid, divx) play well at up to 8mbps on CPU
H.264 plays in CPU to about 4mbps
H.264 play in chipset (with correct setup and codecs) to about 10mbps average.
    MPEG2 goes up over 10mbps
    MJPEG over 16mbps
    WMV up to about 5mbps

These are the averaged-out figures I have in my head from Wibrain i1, Viliv S5 and Kohjinsha SC3 testing.

Hi Chippy, talking about video decoding, I have a few questions. Does the device come with a preinstalled H.264 DirectShow decoder? If yes, what decoder is it? Just today I heard that some guys from Intel are working to add H.264 and VC-1 DXVA decoding to the great MPC-HC player. They work on supporting G45 graphics, I hope they’ll support GMA 500 too. Do you have any information about it?

Also what are the options for video output? I can see there is a multi I/O port but what does it support? I hope there is a HDMI/DVI and s-video output.

Also could you please try if it is possible to run Elisa (http://elisa.fluendo.com/) and XBMC (http://xbmc.org/) on the S5? That would be perfect for multimedia playback.

  4. Hoof says:

ok, who do I have to marry , kill or sell my soul to to get one, and are they really shipping or is this for testing????

    Chippy Reply:

Shipping in Korea but I know that Viliv are working with Mobilx and Dynamism and ‘others’ to get this shipped out.
My belief is that Viliv have a big demand in local markets and might take this low-risk route for their initial sales. I guess it depends on how much they want to invest in paying up front for the production line.
Again, my thoughts; I think they see a big demand in Europe and U.S. but I expect the availability dates to slip as they continue to serve their home market. I think we’ll see this available in about 4 weeks.

I don’t have the official line though. Fingers crossed that it’s coming earlier.

I’ve been trying to look at the various pictures floating around but haven’t been able to determine if the S5 has a headphone jack. Does the Viliv S5 have a headphone jack?

    JeCh Reply:

Yes, it has. Just look at the official site: http://www.myviliv.com/eng/product/s5.asp

  9. Mike W says:

Hello Chippy and thank you for your response.

Not sure if this helps but here is whats inside the mkv container:

    720p : English, 6065 Kbps (6372 Kbps) 1280*688 (1.860) at 23.976 fps, AVC

    1080p : English, 8446 Kbps (8892Kbps) 1920*1040 at 23.976 fps, AVC

By the way I emailed Viliv and they said this product will be realeased near the end of April in the US. Not sure if they will make that happen but I hope they do. With the Korean market creating such a demand as you said, I dont know if they can supply the US market anytime soon.

Viliv also sent this over to me. Its all pretty much on there web site and UMPC Portal, this just makes it easy to find it all:

Mike. 6mbps of AVC (I assume H.264 or WMV9) will be a little too much for the S5 IMO unless you can get it running in hardware. When I got the device, divx and h.264 were being decoded in hardware ok. WMV wasn’t.

Its very strange that so much attention is given to the Viliv S5 yet there is no follow up or review or anything regarding the Viliv S7 and X70 atom for quite some time.

Even the Viliv website have only the S5 up for sale.. what about the Viliv S7 and X70… anyone knows when they are expected to be released, any hint or idea would be highly appreciated as I am thinking about buying a Gigabyte 7″ m704, but if Viliv is launching any of the 7″ devices I will gladly wait…

Any idea Chippy, Mike W ???

    Please someone reply

(Note to Mike W to which VILIV email address did you send, was it in english??)

  12. Mike W says:

    Hello khanchi,

I saw the Viliv S7 info but this unit did not appeal to me. The email address is on the Viliv web site. I sent an email to viliv@myviliv.com and they responded to me within a day. There is a ton of information on the S7 in this forum.

I am not sure about the release date (Chippy can comment on that if he knows) but from what I read. Viliv sold 100 units in Korea and they had to be sent back to have the casing modified. The plastic shell (casing) of the unit was not molded correctly and the finish quality ended up looking horrible. I don’t remember all of the details, came across this during my research of the S5. Most of the info was in Korean so I had to use Google to translate the pages. You can firm that up with your own research.

I may be going with a Everun D60H after all of my research. I just wish there was another product capable of handling .mkv 720p movies without a stutter. I am quite impressed with the D60H, battery life is not as great as I would like. But I guess power is a the trade off to battery life.

  13. Rasti says:

How does it handle XBMC? Would be nice if you can use it like a small portable media center.
