How does it handle XBMC? Would be nice if you can use it like a small portable media center.

Hello khanchi,

I saw the Viliv S7 info but this unit did not appeal to me. The email address is on the Viliv web site. I sent an email to viliv@myviliv.com and they responded to me within a day. There is a ton of information on the S7 in this forum.

I am not sure about the release date (Chippy can comment on that if he knows) but from what I read. Viliv sold 100 units in Korea and they had to be sent back to have the casing modified. The plastic shell (casing) of the unit was not molded correctly and the finish quality ended up looking horrible. I don’t remember all of the details, came across this during my research of the S5. Most of the info was in Korean so I had to use Google to translate the pages. You can firm that up with your own research.

I may be going with a Everun D60H after all of my research. I just wish there was another product capable of handling .mkv 720p movies without a stutter. I am quite impressed with the D60H, battery life is not as great as I would like. But I guess power is a the trade off to battery life.

Its very strange that so much attention is given to the Viliv S5 yet there is no follow up or review or anything regarding the Viliv S7 and X70 atom for quite some time.

Even the Viliv website have only the S5 up for sale.. what about the Viliv S7 and X70... anyone knows when they are expected to be released, any hint or idea would be highly appreciated as I am thinking about buying a Gigabyte 7" m704, but if Viliv is launching any of the 7" devices I will gladly wait...

Any idea Chippy, Mike W ???

Please someone reply

(Note to Mike W to which VILIV email address did you send, was it in english??)

Mike. 6mbps of AVC (I assume H.264 or WMV9) will be a little too much for the S5 IMO unless you can get it running in hardware. When I got the device, divx and h.264 were being decoded in hardware ok. WMV wasn't.

Hello Chippy and thank you for your response.

Not sure if this helps but here is whats inside the mkv container:

720p : English, 6065 Kbps (6372 Kbps) 1280*688 (1.860) at 23.976 fps, AVC

1080p : English, 8446 Kbps (8892Kbps) 1920*1040 at 23.976 fps, AVC

By the way I emailed Viliv and they said this product will be realeased near the end of April in the US. Not sure if they will make that happen but I hope they do. With the Korean market creating such a demand as you said, I dont know if they can supply the US market anytime soon.

Viliv also sent this over to me. Its all pretty much on there web site and UMPC Portal, this just makes it easy to find it all:

EXPOLING THE POSSIBLITY: VILIV S5 PEMIUM.

Multimedia Experience with I-TUNES
By simply downloading the I-tunes from www.apple.com, you can enjoy the same experience of I-POD touch. It is strength of “Window XP based Portable open platform”. You can enjoy the millions of contents such as video and mp3 files through I-tunes shop, Amazon.com and etc.
Availability of contents can be varied depending on region of county.

Full Internet Experience and Dual Browsing System: FastWeb Browser service vs. MicroSoft IE
Viliv S5 has MS IE for full internet experience as well as Fastweb browser like Apple’s Safari.
Comparing with MS IE, Fastweb Browser is server based web viewing solution. It is at least 5 times faster than MS IE due to reducing the browsing data even though it does not play the movie clip in the internet. It must be shinning more under limited bandwidth environment such.
The fastweb service is not free. It will be charged after 6 month user trial.

You can feel the difference how it is different from MS IE after watching the linked video.

Hi Chippy, talking about video decoding, I have a few questions. Does the device come with a preinstalled H.264 DirectShow decoder? If yes, what decoder is it? Just today I heard that some guys from Intel are working to add H.264 and VC-1 DXVA decoding to the great MPC-HC player. They work on supporting G45 graphics, I hope they'll support GMA 500 too. Do you have any information about it?

Also what are the options for video output? I can see there is a multi I/O port but what does it support? I hope there is a HDMI/DVI and s-video output.

Also could you please try if it is possible to run Elisa (http://elisa.fluendo.com/) and XBMC (http://xbmc.org/) on the S5? That would be perfect for multimedia playback.
