Hello Josh:

I sent an email to Inkia in China and they responded with a $300US wholesale price for a sample unit.

This is a basic spec unit with 8 gb SSD, Atom Z510 (1.1 ghz CPU), choice of
 Linux or Wondows XP OS.

The other problem is there is no distribution in North America nor in Europe.

Which means you have use T/T or Bank Transfer to get one from Inkia in China.

This seems to be the major problem with Mid's from China, no distributors in USA, and you can't use PayPal, a secure and proven method to make a
transaction.

I hope someone out there in the USA will soon become a distributor for
 Inkia soon.

 Regards Robert

I'd have to disagree that 1024x600 is too high a resolution for a 4.8" screen. I've been using a Wibrain B1 at that res for about 6 months and I like it. I've been seriously considering an S5 lately because the Wibrain is just a bit too much of a brick (particularly in summertime when I don't have big pockets).

This unit looks very nice specswise except for the screen res.

After seeing the ARM MIDs like the SmartQ5/7, I've been waiting for x86 MIDs to start comming out of China. Perhaps Inkia would let UMPCportal have one for review? Those Chinese sure do know how to build things cheap, and if they are using an establishd OS we might not get the usability/UI problems that usually plague Chinese devices. Hopefully products like this will drive prices down more generally.

Yes, 800×480 is good as long as you are not use a Microsoft OS. However above it does state "Operation system support: Microsoft XP, Linux" I was
You cannot actually view HD video on that screen, unless you are really suggesting 480P (720x480) is HD. I think that HD is 1280x720 resolution (720p) or above.

I was really just trying to point out that it is a poor resolution for Windows. Now Linux is a whole different ball game, most of the issues are over come with custom window managers or custom software specifically written for the resolution. The N800/N810 is a good example of 5" device with 800×480 screen done right. I wonder if the Linux flavor would be Moblin?

I do think that the Viliv S5 is a tad too small for 1024 x 600, however it is the smallest usable resolution for Windows. Anything smaller and other programs start to have problems like trying to click "OK" buttons in some error messages or installers. As the OK button appears off the bottom of the screen and you cannot drag the window up because the title bar is at the top of the screen.

Hello Chad:

In a Mid the size of 5 inch like the Inkia 5 inch, you don't need a higher

 resolution than 800×480 screen.

Cause the screen size is small, so viewing HD video would be good enough.

If you look at Nokia N800/810 they don't have a high screen res either,
and I watch excellent video on my N800.

By the way I happened to know that this Inkia 5 inch Mid starts at $300US,
but that is a wholesale price.

At present you can only buy it through the Inkia manufacture in China.
 Hope this changes soon

Why oh why in this day would someone release a 800x480 screen. Can't we learn from Samsung and the Q1 that this resolution does not work with Microsoft os'es. Hopefully they are really, really, really cheap.

I got my preorder viliv x70 coming at the end of the month to replace my aging Q1. I think that the X70 is the bar new MID/ UMPC/ Internet Tablets need to compete against in build quality, price and performance.
