Some of you will have seen that I’ve started a blog called ‘My Omnia Pro.’
I’ve been tracking smartphone technology since I started blogging about UMPCs but the idea of the new blog is to publicly get my hands dirty in this area. I want to retain a balanced opinion about every technology and operating system and I want to connect with other people working in this area. I’ve chosen (and bought) the Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 as my test device and will be writing about my experiences on the new blog.
A full set of photos is up already but watch out over the next weeks for posts about web performance, applications, keyboard and a whole clutch of other important features.
Note: I’m talking to JKK to try and arrange a ‘smartphone and beer’ live session on Friday evening. HTC Touch Pro2, Nokia N97 and Omnia Pro will be demonstrated if the session happens.

Next gen Tegra is 2010. AFAIK.
N900, Archos internet tablet are the two that are just round the corner.

If you like the Omnia Pro.. check out the Samsung Mondi! It’s the same architecture.. but the Mondi has a much larger screen.

Yup, the Mondi is nice. Ugly and Wimax, but nice.
Bigger screen would make a huge difference.

Omnia pro is based on ARM11? So what is interesting in the smartphone not based on Cortex or Tegra?
September 17th, 2009 at 8:04 am
Hi Squirrel.
Tegra is currently ARM11 too. Next year for Cortex-based Tegra devices.
What’s interesting about the smartphones is that that they are probably not interesting! Well, at least for some of the applications that UMPC and MID fans use. It’s time to start tracking these device by hand and proving that there’s a difference between a smartphone and something built for the full internet experience. I can talk about how MIDs are superior for FIE but unless I can prove that i’m doing extensive research that includes smartphones too, no-one will take me seriously.
Having said that, there are things that are better than on current MIDs. GPS, Cam, Video, Compass, mobile software, community, battery life.
Lots to learn, even from an ARM11 device!

But, Chippy, what’s new in all that?
HTC MAX 4G (wimax verson of HTC Touch HD) is available for 10 months already. It has all that except the physical keyboard.

Pls. get the HTC Leo and the Archos Phone tablet for review too. Since they prolly is not bound for U.S. release. Those two are already out there and we already saw it. I am really looking forward for those 2. I Don’t wanna miss the hype on every smartphone. So I take it 1 smartphone at a time. till those Tegra’s and other good stuffs comes out.

I’m putting my money into devices with keyboards primarily but if I can find someone to send a loaner, i’m happy to check them out.
