Hate to say it but ya, i'm sick of adding money for plugins and their stupid proprietary usb cables and the non swapable battery. The 605 battery life sucked! Enjoy.

after some comments on talk.maemo.org, i ended up digging about how archos merged media playback and android, and bumped into these:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2352832,00.asp
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/hands-on-archos-5-android-internet-tablet-review-635738

the pcmag article claims archos told them the device is running a dual os setup, and the techradar one talks about how some elements of the UI changed appearance when firing up the media player.

and there may be some truth to it, as when i went back and looked at the videos, there where a noticeable "blink" when the media player is launched, almost as if there was a mode change on the display.

Is it clear for anybody, what’s with USB and USB host?

is USB only for media files transfer ?!
http://www.archos.com/products/imt/archos_5it/accessories.html?country=ru&lang=en&p=minidock

USB Host is avalable only with at least mini-dock station
https://store.archos.com/product_info.php

Archos has 2 OS – one proprietary for multimedia and new Android for web!
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2352832,00.asp
maybe that’s why you still have to pay for HD-codecs
Is web with Flash 9 still available for proprietary OS?

182 gm is great, but the "price" you pay for that! (no: cameras, 3G, USB host OTB, radio)
I would prefer 300 gm but will all that…

ugh, it seems the usb host mode is only available thru the mini-docks (and why no vga/dvi?!)...

still, it may be because the device itself cant supply enough to power a usb stick or similar. But it could also be archos typical nickle and dime way...

Yup it looks like you can just download any app and simply install it by double clicking on the .apk file of any Android application.

Archos is recognized as an external hard drive by any OS. No need for drivers.

Ipod supports NO video codec. Archos supports ALL video and audio codecs.

That's exactly right, all videos will simply WORK on Archos while it takes days to encode all your movies and TV shows to make them work on an ipod.

it seems it comes with its own app store, as the larger screen may or may not work with existing android apps.

that said, it seems they have not stopped the user from manually downloading a app, and installing it that way.
