If the video codec is done entirely by the main CPU it's going to struggle. I'm not sure how the current Maemo 5 video player and the one the VLC guys are working on is implemented. I will buy N900 4 sure because it's all in one powerhouse, been thinking about taking HTC Touch Pro2 or HD2 but taking into account that there is no SDK from HTC fro it's Sense UI .. HTC is just not worth it. As for Archos 5, i like the product a lot but taking into account that it's currently full of glitches and that Pixel Qi screens are yet to come in 2010. i will wait further time to buy it - that is unless someone else beats Archos in 5" ARM based tablet (doubt it).
