ASUS EeePC T91MT (Multitouch) pre-order details

Posted on 02 November 2009 by Chippy

t91-2 The Eee PC T91 is one of the few netbooks we really track closely now at UMPCPortal. Most others have drifted off into the forest of 10”. 1.5KG ‘high-end’ netbook land so it’s nice to see some news on it. This time it’s about the multitouch touchscreen version.

With Win 7, 32GB of SSD (no word on the speed of that yet) and XP Home Premium (I assume that the touchscreen drivers will be tablet-enabled) you’re getting quite the deal at a pre-order price of $549.

I’m a big fan of touchscreen laptops and have really got used to flying around the UI of the Gigabyte Touchnote with a two-handed multi-touch-mousepad and screen approach but I still wonder how much extra the multi-touch would bring me. I guess it depends on the type of gestures that are included.

There’s no word on availability yet.

Specifications, images, videos, links for the ASUS T91 available in the product database.

It would be great if multi-touch could be used to simulate right-click. Even better if it could be used to somewhat move the pointer without clicking.

That’s the biggest problem with touch-screen devices in my opinion: interfaces are built to take advantage of right-click and of mouse movements, which you don’t really have on a touchscreen.

All the other stuff about zooming with two fingers and such may provide great demos that appeals the audience, but frankly it’s not that useful from day to day. Right-clicking instead of left-clicking when an additional finger touches the screen could be awesome!

as long as the hardware supports multitouch, the software will catch up. I doubt it would take too long before a driver is released which supports a figer tap right click and probably other useful functions

Chippy could you try and get some info from Asus.DE about the availability in Europe?
It’s been up for ordering with delivery time 2-3 weeks on amazon.de for a week now but nothing changes?!
I guess a specially slimed down version of Win7 Home Premium would have to be installed to save space on the smallish 16GB SSD, the other 16GB are SD card which I would use only for media storage!

Thank’s for the great site Chippy I appreciate it!

I’d be interesyed in hearing how (and whether) having multitouch improves functionality over the regular t91 with windows 7 installed. ~150 bucks seems a huge markup just to get multitouch and a bigger SSD, though I would buy one in a second if they were closer to the regular T91 in price.

Does anybody know, is there some information about the third one – T91go? (with GPS, 3G and TV)?

It’s really rather annoying that they still haven’t put out a Xandros version of this thing.
