Laptopmag: Archos 5 Internet Tablet Review. 8/10 (to Laptopmag)

Posted on 05 November 2009 by Chippy

Laptopmag have beaten me to a full review of the Archos 5 Internet Tablet. That will teach me for playing around with it too much!

we wouldn’t recommend this gadget as a GPS navigator or gaming device. If you’re willing to live with these drawbacks, the Archos 5’s excellent display, media playback, and surfing speed will satisfy.”

They also praise the Wifi strength, screen and the two-finger gestures….er….hold on a minute.

You can pinch and zoom Web sites (with autoscaling off) but not maps in the GPS program. Rotating images with two fingers in the photo viewer took some practice, as the screen didn’t interpret the gestures correctly most of the time.

Just a small correction there then – it’s a single touch resistive touchscreen. No pinching and zooming!

Oh, another correction. There’s no Flash Lite.

Oh, and they didn’t bother to mention the awesome YouTube HD playback capabilities or the fact that this is a bloody fast browser or that it supports uPnP and windows shared drives.  They do mention the poor navigation app though. Although I’ve only had a quick chance to check it out, reports from other user seem to indicate that the quality isn’t quite up to scratch.

Maybe there’s time for my full review after-all!

    Chippy,

I’m getting really close to picking one of these up. Laptop says it gets really warm after using it for only 20 minutes. Has that been true for you?

    @ gmich
    This is definetly wrong!
I have an Archos 5 Android and use it in the evening for 2-3 hours without a break. The device becomes lukewarm, but not uncomfortably warm.
    My iPhone becomes definetly hotter

Agree, No heat issues here. I could generate some heat with about an hour of hard use and it’s certainly hotter than any smartphone but cooler than any UMPC.
    Depends what perspective you have.

    Hi Chippy,

I currently have a little EEEPC 701 that i use on holiday to view emails/web, and transfer pictures from a digital camera.

For email/surfing I don’t mind the change of format. If I get an the Archos, do I just need the additional basic dock (pretty slim design) to use USB Host – for the picture transfer from my D90 ?

    Ta,
    Shane :-)

    Hi Shane.

The adaptor should work as long as your camera appears as a USB drive toa computer.

    but…

How about buyinng a microSDHC card and putting it in an adaptor so you can use it directly in the D90. Then just take the card out, pull the microSD card out of the adaptor and put it into the Archos. Will be quicker and easier.
