Viliv's S5 page: "6 hours continuous movie playback"
Viliv's N5 press release: "Up to 5 hours battery life"
xpPhone's page: "Real life: about 7 hours (standard)"
UMID's M1 page: "6 hrs"
Kohjinsha's PA page: "Approximately 7.5 hours"
Pocketables review of Everun S60H: "runtime of up to 6 hours"

There are plenty of UMPCs with "manufacturer claims" of long battery life.

interface, I don't think point is how they do it, the fact is, it stated to be 5 hours. How many UMPC's last for 5 hours or more? (I only know 1 maybe 2?)
I think battery life has been one of the key issues with UMPC functionality.

The XPPhone hasn't exactly said anything innovative in how they save battery life. Unless they made low power GPS, 3G, WiFi and other components themselves then the device doesn't have any unique features related to battery life.

The interface on the XPPhone isn't exactly a skin placed on top of XP. It's just a phone application that runs in fullscreen where you can send/receive calls and text messages. To do everything else (ie. play videos, browse the internet, run a different program) you have to close the phone application (it still runs in the background) and use the standard XP interface.

UMID uses Thepot Player program for better usability. Here's a video example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkjFu1aynOA

It's unlikely that AMD is using this company to release a new low power CPU to compete with the Atom but I could still hope they are. I like the form factor.

Currently, the lowest power AMD CPUs are the Geode. The 600 MHz Geode LX has a TDP of 5.1 W. Compare that to the significantly faster Atom with a TDP of ~2 W. Also, DDR2 uses up to 65% less power than DDR1. The rest of the chips (WWAN, bluetooth, WLAN, etc.) are likely the standard off the shelf chips found on most devices. So the only places this company can improve power consumption are in the logic board design which doesn't have a big power draw anyway and software. On the software side they just opted for Windows XP Embedded which isn't very innovative.

They claim that calls will wake up the PC from standby so power consumption during standby is higher than other x86 based devices since power is needed to monitor for incoming calls and wake up the device.

Anyway, I'm hoping they're using some new unannounced AMD CPU.

good stuff research. And the fact is, no one knows exactly what processor or what the performance is in the XPphone. WE do not have the real product available for testing right? So this is all skepticism. Of course it would be nice if we had exact details that would make us feel better about the processor and performance. I guess it's an easy target to analyze the processor, but no one is talking much about the features. Every other MID (umid, viliv) are plain, boring features. Just surfing. But the xpphone seems to have some unique features specific to battery life. People forget about battery life in portable devices? Yo, that's like the most important issue in all these UMPC reviews. How about the interface on top of XP. Who cares it's not 7, when XP is faster, and there's a new interface on top anyways. How many people here use 7 anyways? I'm still getting used to the crazy hoggin vista. Have viliv, umid even tried to change the interface to xp?

If they use the NX CPUs, they will get killed by the Core 2 ULV CPUs. The Core 2 Solos go to 1.2GHz and have 5.5W TDP. Even the Core 2 Duos have 10W TDP.

Only reason they are using the Geode is probably price I guess.

Actually, I'm not even sure how they'll squeeze the NX CPUs inside that small chassis. The CPU itself is quite big UMPC-wise.

XPinside models looks promising.. couldn't begin to hypothesize the potentially exorbitant cost of them however. This is going to be an interesting experiment for the procurers..

Lastly.. why not just purchase the oQo IP.. add cellular capabilities and be done with it??

in their Chinese specs: "可支持 1024 x 768 双清显示", supports 1024 x 768 double clarity(?) display, you can also choose the SSD size. go to the last link and click on "中文" beside "English" and you can see the specs with prices.

According this page, http://www.xpphone.com/en/yingyong/Customized.html, you can customize it with an AMD CPU greater than 1 GHz. If they're still using the Geode then it has to be the NX CPUs but those have high power consumption.

http://www.amd.com/us-en/ConnectivitySolutions/ProductInformation/0,,50_2330_9863_10837%5E10858,00.html
NX 1250 (667 MHz): 6 W Average Power, 9 W TDP
NX 1500 (1 GHz): 6 W Average Power, 9 W TDP
NX 1750 (1.4 GHz): 14 W Average Power, 25 W TDP

These are different sized CPUs and are not pin compatible with the Geode LX CPUs. That power consumption is getting close to Mobile Core 2 Duos which are probably a lot faster.

Core 2 Duo P9600 (2.66 GHz): 25 W TDP

Well, perhaps they can learn from this model and make a better XP phone later. A bit like how the UMID BZ may not have existed without them testing the concept with the M1 first. There aren't that many decent low power x86 platforms for Windows XP from which to choose from though.

Yeah, I remember the old days of the Everun with the Geode CPU.They weren`t happy days concerning the Flash performance.Youtube was struggling to produce average framerates. My 600Mhz N900 is way better concerning flash! Why do I need this phone then if I can do almost 90% of my daily surfing on the N900? N900 is smaller, can play better flash content, has a wonderful 5 Mpix camera, has open source (Mirc, firefox browser, skype, you name it), plays almost all video content. Its a good concept but too late for the market. If it was 2006 I would consider it, but not in 2010.LG with Atom will be way better than this....so yeah, good concept poor execution.
