I took the train down to Munich today to meet up, or rather, Tweet-up, with Intel. It was a great evening and there’s more to that part of the story but it’s the night train back that I want to tell you about now. I have 6 hours until I arrive at Bonn so let me tell you a little bit about a single cabin on the night train from [...]

Just as we expected, the Dynamism pricing details for the Viliv N5 that we did our Open Review on last night are now available. Dynamism have sent the details over and as with previous Viliv launches, are including a special offer. If you order between July 6th and July 15th you get a free battery worth $50. That’s worth having because the N5 battery is tiny and yet appears to [...]

We did a good 2.5hrs of testing on the Viliv N5 with hundreds of visitors via the live session over Ustream this evening. It was a live unboxing for me so my first impressions will come later this week but in the meantime, here are the live recordings we produced.

First things first, Pocketables have a full review of the Viliv N5 up. They seem to be very happy with the device although there’s confirmation that there’s no video-out port. It’s been blanked-off. Click-through for the full review. After you’ve read the review, don’t forget that despite the high possibility that my N5 won’t turn up in time, JKKMobile is getting his and we’re planning a live session. This will [...]

Update: Thanks to Timelock’s comment below, it looks like we’ve managed to shake the N5 free of customs although the timing was strange. It cleared customs before I sent a copy of my customs-number form. Maybe all the calls, faxes and emails helped in the end. The N5 should be with me for the live session tonight. Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and tips. Update: I have the N5 [...]

Focused around a visit from Intel’s social-media expert and ‘Community Hacker’ Josh Bancroft, the tweet-up next Tuesday the 29th June in Munich is open to all and is likely to be interesting to mobility fans because Josh is deeply into all manner of mobile devices. If I remember correctly he had an ASUS R2H UMPC. I wonder if he still uses it! I’ll be heading down to meet Josh and [...]

Here’s the weekly rundown of items that we posted to the middle column on UMPCPortal, our ‘Other News’ section. It’s all good UMPC and MID-related stuff that, in most cases, we didn’t write about as a main news item. Published Good News: The iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM. We, along with nearly everyone else, previously presumed that the iPhone 4 [Portal page (updated)] would feature 256MB of RAM… Shared [...]

Many of you have asked about the inking ability of the Acer 1825 PT I reviewed two weeks back, so I thought I would do a short demonstration video of it. As you can see its not a perfect experience and won’t provide the same level as a full tablet PC with an active digitiser but it usable for short note taking sessions.

Viliv have just shipped an N5 to me (and I suspect other bloggers) for long-term testing and it’s expected here on the 25th. (Friday) so if all goes to plan, you should be seeing an unboxing video on Friday afternoon. I’ll try and sync up with JKK to get a live session going too. As for availability, I’m expecting the delivery here to coincide with an announcement of pricing and [...]

After Computex in Taiwan, a speaking gig in Barcelona, a casual weekend away in Holland and four days with my mother I’ve forgotten what my desk looks like. I’m even sitting on a train to Hannover as I write this! During the last weeks I’ve also built up reliance on an unnecessarily large stable of mobile devices and it’s frustrating me more than ever because we are deep in a [...]

Shame. While the Libretto W100 looks good and opens the mind, that second touchscreen is obviously more for the marketing than for the people that were attracted to the original Librettos. Like a diamond-encrusted iPhone, the W100 seeks out media attention rather than addressing the issue of getting things done when on the move. Not only is the hardware keyboard missing but the battery life is going to be an [...]

I know there are a lot of designers, manufacturers and resellers that read UMPCPortal so this one is for you. Potential Windows 7 Slate customers should also read this. In fact, as a reviewer, I’m learning from this White Paper too! Windows 7 Engineering Guidance for Slate PCs. Windows for Devices have reproduced an extremely useful white paper by Microsoft that gives detailed information about what Windows 7 can bring [...]

The XPPhone story has been quite a long one and many of us wondered whether the device would reach the market but it has, and we took a look at it at Computex. The mechanics were very solid, the operation very easy and the keyboard quite good. The phone functions work and even the battery life appears to be acceptable. This is definitely a specialist device but if you’re prepared [...]

I wanted to live with the Acer 1825 PT [image gallery] for a couple of weeks before I posted a review because using it for a couple of days isn’t a good test of any device. Its been a great work horse but not without its faults. If you haven’t already, check out my unboxing video. Hardware Overall the look of and feel of the Acer is good, its very [...]
