I’m already testing and charging my kit for IFA because on Thursday morning I’ll be on my way up to Berlin to get busy. The 2nd of Sept is a press and launch day and we expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy Tab in the morning. Unfortunately I’ll still be in the train but I’ll be watching out for news with Sascha (netbooknews) who’s traveling up with me. In the [...]

A Smart ‘Pad’, Smart ‘Book’ or a Netbook? (Introducing the Mobile Device ‘Chooser’ Tool)

Posted on 26 August 2010

Isn’t it strange that despite all the singing and dancing by companies like Nvidia, ARM, Qualcomm and others, the ‘smart’ books (or social netbooks as I often call them to avoid legal issues here in Germany) haven’t yet reached the market. ARM highlight delays with Flash and there are probably many other excuses but the biggest one is the iPad which is one of the smartest devices around. It has [...]

MSI WindPad 100 Delayed for Oak Trail (=2011)

Posted on 25 August 2010

It makes a lot of sense for MSI to wait for the incoming ultra mobile PC platform from Intel rather than launch early with the relatively old Menlow platform and that’s exactly what they’ve gone public about today. MSI WindPad 100 Delayed, Waiting on Oak Trail. Oaktrail isn’t expected until 2011 but it represents quite an important redesign for Intels lowest power windows-compatable computing platform. In summary you can expect [...]

Libretto W100 Gets Unboxing, Credit!

Posted on 19 August 2010

Jenn of Pocketables has a Libretto U100 from Conics.net and in her unboxing and first impressions there are definitely getting some good vibes being sent out. ‘The cool factor is off the charts’ she says. I tend to agree but is it actually usable? I had a chat with the guys from Wow Pow blog yesterday and there’s some good vibes coming from them too. Certainly the keyboard software seems [...]

Lightweight and Mobile-Focused 3G Netbooks (And Alternatives.)

Posted on 10 August 2010

Long-gone are the days where netbooks were available at the 1KG mark. The Asus 901, Acer A150. Classic 1KG, 8.9” netbooks that worked well as mobile-focused PCs for getting things done almost anywhere. The EeePC 901GO was arguably one of the best mobile bargains around at the time, at least in Europe. No hard drive, sub 1KG, 3G and a great price. Oh how things have changed. All we seem [...]

Intel AppUp. Games, Air and other Elements

Posted on 10 August 2010

AppUp is the Intel-designed platform for app-stores on Windows and Maemo/MeeGo devices that utilize their Atom products. Smartphones, netbooks, tablets, UMPCs and MIDs navigation devices, Internet TV and in-car entertainment all fall under that banner which make AppUp an interesting move as we consider the addressable market over the next 5 years. Progress continues (AppUp was only born just over a year ago) and we expect to hear a lot [...]

Ti Announces License for ARMs ‘Eagle.’ Cortex A10 / OMAP 5 for 2013?

Posted on 09 August 2010

No-one really knows much about ARMs Eagle CPU design yet. I spotted it on a slide at Computex earlier this year but the only real info available is from a presentation back in 2009. It’s the next-next generation high-end core and likely to be produced in a 28nm process but based on the standard lead-time for an ARM architecture to get into an end product I’d say we’re looking at [...]
