Ultrabooks To Bring Mainstream Closer To Mobility

Posted on 31 May 2011

As you might have read in the press release from earlier, Intel announced a range of activities and products at Computex today but whichever way you look at it, their pivot-point just moved closer to mobility. Not only did Intel showcase a Medfield tablet running an official X86 build of Android (which will have marketplace support) but they launched a new initiative called ‘Ultrabooks.’ Backed by a trademark, they will [...]

FIC Tycoon+ offers Improved Windows Tablet

Posted on 31 May 2011

First International Computer gave me a T-Shirt last year after we reviewed their N450 based ‘Tycoon’ tablet and strangely enough, I’m wearing it today as I read their press release! We were impressed with the screen and build quality and thought they might have a chance for some sales. At that time FIC said they were also looking to do a reference design with Oaktrail so I was a little [...]

Press Release Reveals Intel Plans Ahead of Keynote. Ultrabooks and Android Feature.

Posted on 31 May 2011

While not too surprising in terms of content, this leaked press release, a few hours ahead of Intel’s Computex Keynote, highlights a big shift towards ultra mobile and Atom-based solutions. Key points of the press release are the accelerating Atom program, a Medfield tablet running Honeycomb, Ultrabooks, Cedar Trail and 10 tablets based on Oaktrail. We suspect these tablets will be included in the demo but we’re interested in the [...]

Keeley Lake. Another Reference Design that Intel Should Produce

Posted on 31 May 2011

Is it Oaktrail or is it Cedar Trail. Given that Cedar Trail is likely to be a big component of Intel’s keynote in about 4hrs (with netbook and tablet details scheduled for another keynote tomorrow) then that’s where I would but my money. Notebook Italia got a glimpse of the ultra-thin device which has ports re-located to the rear due to the thinness of the chassis. Remember the Cedar Trail [...]

Meego Netbook, Eee PC X101, appears at Computex

Posted on 30 May 2011

JKKMobile and netbooknews are reporting on a new Eee PC X101 Meego netbook spotted at Computex today. It’s thin, driven by an SSD, has an App Store and is likely to be built on the Oaktrail platform although that’s not confirmed yet. Update: We’re hearing it’s based on an N435 CPU! Stay tuned for confirmation of that. There’s no indication of launch date or price either so we’ll have to [...]

MeeGo Conference Round-Up

Posted on 30 May 2011

This is a summary of the extended article published over at MeeGoNews.com following my attendance there last week. In summary, we might as well call the MeeGo Conference an event for the core members, developers and vendors and not a showcase event. While reporters may have walked away very disappointed, attendance was high and there were great opportunities for partners to do business. Highlighting a growth in the IVI (In [...]

Punk This – Swap your hard-drive for ARM / X86 Flexibility

Posted on 30 May 2011

JKKMobile has been quiet lately but if you’ve been listening to the MeetMobility podcasts you’ll know he’s been working on something with Cupp Computing in the background. He’s just made the fruits of his work public and it’s a stormingly disruptive device. Yes, we just created a new word for this product! Remember the HTC Shift and its ability to switch between X86 and ARM CPUs? It was a fantastic [...]

Why Android on Oaktrail? The Answer Should be Confirmed at Computex

Posted on 29 May 2011

With rumors of Android / Oaktrail tablets flying around, you might wonder why? Intel based tablets aren’t exactly renowned for their long battery life and the open-source Android versions we’ve seen so far are a lot different to the Google-enhanced Android tablets we know from the ARM world but these two issues can change and this week at Computex we should have the first chance to confirm this. Firstly, Intel [...]

Dreambook Epad F10 – Oaktrail Tablet Available Soon

Posted on 29 May 2011

Recently launched and soon to be  available is this Oaktrail-based tablet that will be one to watch out for at Computex. If you’re looking for a newer i86-based device, Pioneer Computers are offering it for under $US 550 with 16GB of storage and 1GB of RAM and it could be an interesting device for Windows, Meego and Android. Oaktrail should offer much better battery life than Pinetrail-based devices (N450, [...]

Inking on the HTC Flyer with the ‘Magic Pen’

Posted on 18 May 2011

HTCs Flyer is one of the first Android Tablets we’ve seen that could find a place in some new niches; Namely, pen input. From the outset I need to make it clear that the HTC Flyer isn’t a professional handwriting recognition product. There is no on-the-fly character recognition. There’s also a disconnect between the digitiser layer, the HTC pen-enabled apps and the rest of the finger-controllable tablet. What is interesting [...]

Onkyo TW317 Slate Full Review

Posted on 17 May 2011

Oh where to begin with this review… The Onkyo TW317 is a rare breed of soon-to-be-extinct computer known as a “capacitive touchscreen Windows 7 slate”. What this means is that the TW317 lacks a real keyboard or mouse. Unlike some other slates which add accurate handwriting and mouse-hovering abilities with an active digitizer — which supplement the removal of the keyboard/mouse — the TW317 relies completely on its capacitive touchscreen for finger-based input.

Another use for the Oaktrail Tablet – Intel Honeycomb in 2H 2011.

Posted on 13 May 2011

I’ve been talking about this since, well, over a year ago.  Intel’s new-generation mobile platforms, including Oaktrail, Moorestown and Medfield, could couple well with Android. I don’t mean a community X86 project, I mean official, Google approved, power-optimised versions of Android. Honeycomb included. Image right: Mock-up Digitimes just reported that “Asustek Computer and Lenovo are to launch Oak Trail/Android 3.1 tablet PCs soon and also Cedar Trail/ Chrome models in [...]
