First Hands-On With the Sony Vaio Ultrabooks Surface. Ivy Bridge Confirmed.

“I have hands on for all the Sony Ultrabooks!” said the email from fellow Germany-based blogger Balazs Gal of Techfokus. Checking out his YouTube channel reveals three videos. That’s the Vaio T13, the Vaio T11 and a comparison video. Balazs also got confirmation, from an official representative, that there’s an Ivy Bridge version. Yes, the one we spotted!

I’ll link you to the news articles here. (Translations: T13  and T11) Check them out for a good set of pics. The videos are embedded below.

Update: The Sony T13 and T11 have the Intel HM77 chipset with integrated USB3.0 and other new features. The more interesting part of that is that it’s the latest chipset and it supports Ivy Bridge; Another confirmation that Sony are planning to right across the low-to high-end with this product. High-end versions with 512GB SSD and an Ivy Bridge Core i7 will be well over $2000, for certain but a $700 (or thereabouts) stating price brings it to the masses. Again, Ultrabooks proving they have a high dynamic range of use cases.

Note the replaceable battery is now confirmed. Memory access port is also shown.

We asked Balasz about the battery capacity and he’s reporting 45Wh. It’s the same battery pack for both T11 and T13 so not bad for a the T11, not good for the T13!

Replaceable battery. But not really all that removable since it is secured by screws. wtf. All metal is another questionable design choice. No backlit keyboard either. Did Sony fire all its good engineers or are they intentionally putting out a mediocre product to avoid cannibalizing S/Z series sales.

Nice to see VGA and Ethernet though.

And the award for the thickest screen bezel of 2012 goes to…. Seriously if you ignore how thin it is the screen looks like a late 1990s Compaq I had. Thick screen bezels like that do NOT scream “premium.” (And the 11″ Macbook air has huge screen bezels, too.)

The Samsung 9 series is one sexy beast and that thin screen bezel has a lot to do with it.

Reminds me of those early days cheapy netbooks.

Might as well get the 13″.

  4. animatio says:

yep, the t11 is a clear no go … bezel around the screen as well the keyboard far too large for a 11″ device giving it a negative formfactor. or you take it as a “cheap” 13″ version … but even then you might get better stuff from others at a comparable price

sadly sony isnt into matt screen are they ? they have their own screen technology but does anyone know how well it will hold up outside in the garden in sunlight ?

Could you be more concentrated on AMD APU’s?

I think this is more realistic CPU than Intels and I would love to see UltraBooks with them.

May 15th is the launch date. There are no Trinity product leaks as yet but we are keeping a close close eye on it.
