Samsung Series 9 Appears with Ivy Bridge – Confused?

Posted on 03 May 2012, Last updated on 03 May 2012 by

We’re confused. Trying to get a hold on the models numbers, specifications and availability of the new Samsung Series 9 in just the USA, UK and Germany is driving us crazy and adding to the confusion today is news via Engadget that Samsung UK have listed an Ivy Bridge version of the gorgeous Series 9 2012. There’s also an Ivy Bridge version of the 13.3” version appearing in Austria. The 900X3C with 4GB of RAM and the Ivy Bridge i5-3317UM is showing for €1253 with an expected availability of 21 May. We don’t believe any Ivy-Bridge Ultrabook will ship before June but remember that the Series 5 is already launched and, importantly, not an Ultrabook!

Not even the option for 256GB in the ivy bridge models…why?

  2. Chippy says:

Possibly. As mentioned, sub-variants are appearing.

Thank you Chippy for keeping on the ball for us and bringing some structure into the confusion. For me it´s annoying that while german internet seller redcoon.de anounces the i7 256 ssd sandy bridge as available ans cyberport.de the i5 128 13 inch as available to send in a few days the german samsung site of all places has not even put the 2nd gen samsung series 9 on their product list ? When i e-mail samsung germany a month or so ago asking them when the 2nd gen series 9 would be in the shops .. i just got the reply they wouldnt know this kind of thing but i should enquire with the sellers? This reply striked me as so lame i couldnt be stuffed to follow it up with a second email. Why would samsung germany not know the release date of their own products but places like redcoon.de should? All the while no other shops seem to carry the product amazon.de or how about going to real shops like mediamarkt or saturn and check the product out for yourself- but no it´s not their ! well lets hope it will appear in the shelves soon this month !

The problem is this.Big distributors get samples early and know the details. Because of the huge SEO advantage of leaking products, it encourages distributors to put details out to resellers. Meanwhile Samsung, under the control of a strict marketing plan and agreements with suppliers like Intel, can’t say a word. Samsung meanwhile are happy for products to leak because it creates buzz. It’s not quite ‘launch theater’ but the way it goes tends to suit everyone in the chain.

Anyone know if Samsung is updating the 11.6″ NP300 to Ivy Bridge? Hopefully keeping the same footprint. Thanks!

  6. artaman says:

I have no info on that; but to be honest since they didn’t even update it to the 2nd Gen design I would assume that they are leaning towards phasing out rather than upgrading it any further…

  7. toki says:

That’s really unfortunate if it’s true since I’d rather buy an NP300 with upgraded specs than any of the 11.6″ ultrabooks. It has a smaller footprint which is much more important to me than being a little thinner.

I guess i am still confused about this chippy, when i e-mailed toshiba asking them last year when the toshiba z830 in its portege version would be out they told me — early 2012 .. sony is appearently able to tell us about T11 and T13 ultrabooks comming out in may , june .. but when asking samsung germany when the 2012 version of their samsung series 9 version which is already out in the UK is comming out in Germany they have no clue ? do sony and toshiba have no restrictions in telling me something but samsung does? HP and Sony give launching dates of their products .. ok so I learned Samsung isnt really making or shipping their products like all the rest they invent design their stuff and then comission producers and suppliers to manufacture their products but presumeably they are still in charge of what they do? I wish someone could explain this to me in easy terms like i was 5 years old:)sigh

Wow… You just blew my mind! You mean that resellers/retailers put information about pre-release products on their site early so that when the product actually launches and people start looking to buy the product through search engines those retailers come up higher in the list because they’ve had the products listed on their websites longer?!?!

-I hope I understood that correctly. It certainly makes a lot of sense if that’s what you’re saying but is something I’ve never thought about before.
