We’ve just got back from the Samsung HQ in Germany with a 15” Series 9 Ultrabook under our arms. It’s a stunning bit of kit and after just an hour of testing on the train back the feeling is already very positive. The screen, keyboard, styling and battery life and speed are all looking good. Of course, more testing needs to be done and we’ll be working on that over the next week so stay with us. To kick things off we’ve got an overview video for you.

Before you watch the overview video please note that we’ve got a live video review of the Series 9 tomorrow (June 14th) starting at 2100 CEST (http://ultrabooknews.com/live for more info.) Join us for Q&A and our first Ivy Bridge gaming testing!

Thanks, looking forward to the review!
How much free disk space is left on the 128GB SSD? Hoping they come out with a 256GB version in the UK….

  2. DavidC1 says:

Did they make the new Series 9 really an Ultrabook?

  3. Chippy says:

Samsung are not promoting it as an Ultrabook. Intel appeared to call it an Ultrabook at Computex. I can’t find any reason why it can’t be an ultrabook.

  4. vjachi says:

I don’t think it’s ultrabook, officially only of course :) In US there is 256 GB version for 1799$/euro :))

  5. DavidC1 says:

Huh. I thought I posted the response.

Yes, Chippy clarified that in his video.

So again. Great work Chippy on the preview. Looks way better looking than the Series 9. Hope they got the throttling issues worked out on this one. :P

i am looking very much forward to this review !!!!!! I also hope Asus Germany will send you there zenbook prime .. because it is between these two where my descicion will most likely lie. Things i am interested in are the noise level of the samsung the webcam quality and the sound of the speakers …

  7. MP says:

Looking forward to it! Very excited about this laptop! Unfortunately I have to go to work an hour in, but I’ll watch up til then.

I also would like to know about the noise level and the sound of the speakers, just like Robert. Wouldn’t mind a test of the SSD speeds either. :)

The screen looked “good” but I thought it was supposed to be PLS, Samsung’s version of IPS. It certainly didn’t look like an IPS screen when tilted in the overview video. Good viewing angles, but not amazing.

I’ve also heard rumors about the lid/screen being flimsy. Would seem odd on such a premium device though.

Curious about the “silent mode”. How does it work? And is it efficient?

And – $1799 for the 256 version? Ouch, my wallet hurts just thinking about it. Is it the same price for the 13.3″?

  8. Chippy says:

    I can answer that.
I saw the 13.3 and 15″ models. The 13″ is IPS quality. Stunning. Samsung Germany confirmed that the screens are different.

    13.3″ – PLS
    15″ – Samsung high quality

  9. vjachi says:

    so 13.3″ have better screen??

  10. Chippy says:

Silent mode is a fan-off mode and low-power settings mode at the same time.
The fan really pumps some air when the 15″ version is used for gaming, gets warm too. It’s a little more than I expected but is good under office conditions.

  11. MP says:

    Thanks for the info!
13.3″ IPS in a 12″ chassis with a slim bezel. I like the sound of that! Too bad about the 15″ screen. It seemed decent enough for sure, but not IPS quality.

Fan-off mode sounds really interesting. If it can play music, movies and I can surf the web with it on, I’m sold!

I just hope the 256Gb version isn’t too expensive. :)

Like MP if i can serve the web chat watch youtube n videos without constant fan nice i´d be happy … interesting to hear about the different screen qualities .. with 13 inch being better quality it would make the switch to the zenbook prime which does not come at 15 inches easier. i like the 15 inch screen size but its also considerably heavier .. the one plus would be a longer battery life .. the one who is more silent has better screen sound and cam _ apart from ssd and usual considerations .. should win .. provided there is no other showstopper emerging … Not sure why chippy was told samsung 9 will sell in july .. its already selling in germany at places like cybeport.de .. Samsung Germany is a funny bunch first they tell people they dont know when their product comes out and what should enquirer with the re-sellers. and when online shops finally offer the samsung 9 to be delivered within 24 hrs chippy gets told the availability is july .. ? lol
