The Verge gets Hands-On with Acer Aspire S7

If you’re looking for a new 11” Ultrabook, the Acer Aspire S7 is probably on your list, especially if you’re interested in driving Windows 8 with a little bit of touch. We’re expecting the Acer Aspire S7 to be in the premium pricing category (i.e. not at the $799 that the Samsung Series 5 Touch could start at) but it will be much thinner and lighter than that.  The Verge have taken it for a spin and are extremely impressed by the build and style. Unanswered questions remain though…

Acer Aspire S7

Pricing, battery size and availability are specifications we’re working on adding to the database as soon as possible.

The video (which we couldn’t get to embedd here below) is in the complete article at The Verge.

Too bad The Verge didn’t get any useful/new information on the 11.6″ S7. All they did was make a more artistic video but provided the same information as previous hands on videos.

I really hope it’s true that there’s a non-touch version. I could spend that $100-$150 on something else.

The one The Verge has doesn’t have a Thunderbolt port. It’s a USB port instead. I don’t like the power button placement. It could get accidentally pressed. My clumsy self has accidentally ejected SDHC cards from notebooks when putting them in/out of my bags.

Since the device they had was a prototype, hopefully it gets some changes when released. For example, different keyboard layout/keys, full size SDHC/SDXC card slot, a 9 hour battery life claim that’s not a pure idle scenario and a multitouch gesture touchpad.

I wouldn’t have minded a thicker device if they could have used full-sized video ports and SD slot.

I wonder if Acer decided to get rid of the Thunderbolt port. That would be unfortunate since if they’re going with mini-ports anyway, I would have preferred DisplayPort video via Thunderbolt instead of micro-HDMI since it supports VGA, DVI and HDMI video.

The touchpad issue The Verge mentions is hopefully just a prototype issue. Not having a multi-touch trackpad is pretty bad for today’s notebooks.

Whether or not I’d be buying this is if their original battery claim of 9 hours isn’t too imaginary. The video does mention 6 hours now so if that’s Acer’s new “up to” claim then I’ll be waiting for the 3rd generation of ultrabooks.

Yes a non glarie ips version would be great..

I remember previous videos showing a matte display. Was that just for a prototype that didn’t have the glass installed? The glass is disappointing. I’d rather not put a matte screen protector on since I’m bad at that.

    Wired handled a different prototype:
    http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-08/31/acer-aspire-s7-preview
    -1080p screen looks more matte
    -180 degree screen angle
    -multitouch gestures on the touchpad
    -9-12 hour battery claim
-2 USB ports on the right side
-The micro-HDMI is moved to the left side which replaces the Thunderbolt port
-The SD slot looks like a full-sized SD slot now so that’s good

I wonder which of these prototypes is closer to the final design.

  7. Alex Q. says:

Wow, Acer seems to be improving the S7. Hopefully, they’ll put back the Thunderbolt port instead of the micro-HDMI. Unless they go with a full sized HDMI instead.

  8. Jose says:

They just need a non-touch option in exchange for more RAM or an i7.

  9. Guest says:

I’m hoping that too. More RAM or faster CPU is a lot more useful than a slapping on a touch panel on an ultrabook. Maybe even a matte screen.

Maybe they’ll continue with the full sized ports and go with a regular sized HDMI port.

  10. hocus says:

I think those photos in their gallery are for the 13.3″ model, unfortunately. It would have been nice if Acer really did put full sized ports on the 11.6″ one.

  11. Rosario Bonifer says:

HDMI is a very good interface indeed since it supports high bandwidth video.^
