Demo: Windows 8 Applications on Clovertrail with the Acer Iconia W510

Posted on 18 December 2012

The 20-minute video below might be a little long for the average YouTube video hopper but I’m sure it will have more meaning here where there appear to be quite a number of people joining us via Google searches for W510, ATIV 500T and related terms. In the video below you’ll see start-up times for the Acer Iconia W510 (20 seconds or less,) start-up times for a big set of Windows 8 applications and speed-of-use with Windows 8 apps.

A Peek Inside the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro + First Customer Feedback

Posted on 18 December 2012

Competitor to the Microsoft Surface Pro (and 4 other Core-based dockables,) the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro / 700T / XE700 hasn’t exactly got the market to itself but given Samsung’s history of making tablets we think they have a good chance of being one of the most popular brands in the category and when Samsung posts details about what’s going inside the SmartPC Pro you get the impression they have some confidence too. Check out some of the key features inside the Samsung ATIV SmartPC Pro below and read-on […]

Acer W510 and On-Screen Keyboard (Portrait) Works Well – Video

Posted on 17 December 2012

I’m a big fan of portrait-mode thumbing as a keyboard input method. I’ve used it for over 2 years on my Galaxy Tab and it’s been fast enough and easy enough that I’ve posted a large number of blog posts with it. The 10 inch Acer Iconia W510 with it’s light weight and 16:9 format screen offers something close although it’s not perfect. An 8.9 inch Windows 8 tablet might be the way forward due to smaller size and a potential sub 500gm / 1lb weight but for the time being, […]

Implementing Sensors in Ultrabook Desktop Applications

Posted on 17 December 2012

As part of our continuing work with Intel to highlight interesting software and developer demos, techniques and tools for Ultrabooks running Windows 8 we’ve got something here that would interest software developers looking at integrating media, social and sensor into their Windows 8 desktop software. Hopefully, as a developer, you’re aware that some Windows 8 Ultrabooks have sensor integration. Sensors include cameras, GPS, NFC, touch, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, accelerometer and electronic compass. If you’re interested in this area, check out a really detailed tutorial with information and code pack […]

Acer W510 and CloverTrail Overview Video and First Impressions. Always-On is Killer!

Posted on 16 December 2012

Written on the Acer W510. Intel CloverTrail is a truly ground-breaking PC platform and the Acer W510 appears, in my 48hrs with it, to offer great ways to enjoy the new features of the platform along with amazing value. At least it does in Europe where the tablet and docking station can be had for €499 inclusive tax. I have the €599 version here which includes 64GB of storage. I’ve been extremely impressed so far. It’s light enough to use in portrait mode using thumb input, it has battery life […]

Ultrabook and Touch Hangout at 2100 CET

Posted on 14 December 2012

It’s 1838 as I post this and I want to remind you all that I’m hosting a live Google Hangout at 2100 where I’ll be spending some time going over sildenafil the Lenovo Twist, Toshiba U940 and Acer W510 (CloverTrail) Windows 8 devices. If everything goes well we’ll have an open Q&A session. The session will stream live and I’ll try and embed the video here. For more information about the session you can check out the Hangout Event invite here on Google Plus.

Ultrabook and Touch Hangout Video

Posted on 14 December 2012

The Live video is over but it’s embedded below. I must say that the session didn’t go as planned. At some point the URL got changed and people couldn’t get into the Hangout. Maybe we’ll try again soon but it was certainly not as good as the Ustream sessions we’ve run where people like to chat and don’t need to put their face up on video. I’ll look into restoring the original method.

Lenovo Thinkpad Twist Review

Posted on 14 December 2012

Business and pleasure mixed into a fun and inspirational package. The touch-swivel Windows 8 Lenovo ThinkPad Twist is a solid performer with an excellent working fascia for many scenarios. It’s not a consumer tablet though and there are one or two characteristics to be aware of but at a starting price of $899 for a Core i5 variant (959 Euro, 899 Euro street price) we think it offers solid value for money.
