Posted on 25 September 2013

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 – Specifications, Video, Images

Posted on 23 September 2013

Surface Pro 2 has just been announced and, surprisingly, Microsoft haven’t chosen to go with a Y-Series low-TDP Haswell CPU for a thinner design. For the time being the Tap 11 remains the thinnest and lightest Haswel-based tablet. What Microsoft have done is gone for processing power and lots more battery life, largely enabled by a keyboard cover with a 30Wh battery inside. There’s a brand new docking station too which seals its position as a professional tablet. Size and weight doesn’t change and price starts at $899. […]

HP Omni 10 Due in Nov. Baytrail, 10-inch and Windows 8.1. Specifications

Posted on 19 September 2013

We’ve seen the Dell Venue 8, the Toshiba Venue, heard about the Acer iconia A1 and had hands-on with the ASUS T100 but now it’s HP’s turn to launch a Windows 8.1 Tablet on Baytrail. The HP Omni 10 is a no-frills tablet, probably aimed at a professional market rather than a consumer one. HP Omni 10 Specifications Intel Baytrail-T (Z3000 series) processor 64Gb SSD (always eMMC for Z3000-series products) 2GB RAM 10” 1900×1200 IPS screen Micro-HDMI Micro-USB (USB3.0 ?) Micro-SD card slot SIM card slot 8MP (rear) 2MP (front) […]

MSI W20 is a Fanless, Super-Light Windows 8 11.6-Incher

Posted on 19 September 2013

When I picked up the MSI W20 at an AMD event last week I was impressed. 1.5lb is 680 grams and that isn’t bad for an 11.6-inch tablet. Based on the build and CPU I’m guessing we’re looking at a low-cost Windows 8.1 tablet and if the price is right, this could be a nice couch-mate. The A4-1200 CPU isn’t going to be hugely powerful (in the same ball-park as Atom Clovertrail) and the build quality doesn’t seem to be anything to sing about. The screen is a 1366×768 part […]

Baytrail-M, Small-Screen Touch and the $399 Detachable

Posted on 19 September 2013

We’ve seen Baytrail –T products in action. The tablet-focused processor, the Atom Z3000 range of parts, will enable products under the ‘small screen’ category; up to 11.6-inch Windows 8.1 or Android based tablets and 2-in-1’s. The most powerful SoC, the quad-core Z3770, will deliver short-term clock speeds up to 2.4GHz and support screen resolutions up to 2,560 x 1,600. The Z3470 variant run up to 1.8Ghz maximum clock. Both are quad-core. SDPs of 2-2.4W means you’ll find these products in the thinnest and lightest tablets possible. When it comes to […]

Nokia Lumia 925 First Impressions

Posted on 18 September 2013

I’ve been using Nokia phones non-stop since the 6280 and their cameraphones since Feb 2008 when I bought the N82. I’ve tested other phones (mostly Sony’s) but always end up going back to Nokia. The Nokia 808 has produced thousands of quality photos’ for me and many that I wouldn’t have had if I’d been relying on even a pocket digital camera but despite the 808 matching most of my phone needs, it’s just too slow for any web or internet application work. When I picked up a Nokia Lumia […]

ASUS Transformer Book (T300 with Haswell) Hands-On

Posted on 15 September 2013

I had hands-on with the new version of the ASUS Transformer Book at IDF13 this week and while it excites me to see Haswell pushing down into this form factor I’m of the opinion that, for now, Baytrail-based 2-in-1’s will better meet the average requirements in this space. Price is one factor but weight of tablet is a huge problem for consumers – the type of customers that should be targeted by 2-in-1’s to help turn round the PC business. Having said that…

Baytrail Fits but Ultrabooks remain Best-In-Class

Posted on 15 September 2013

The Ultrabook project has been solely responsible for turning round the PC design and engineering business and by that I mean reducing cost and introducing design flexibility that allows OEMs to respond to changing customer demands. The Ultrabook project forced tighter integration of components on a smaller motherboard, reducing the number of upgradable/serviceable components and removing nearly all electro-mechanical parts. It drastically reduced the thermal energy generated by a typical loaded motherboard and introduced new heat-reduction technology. The combination of small motherboard, fewer options and lower thermals led to convertible […]
