Toshiba focuses on Wacom pen with Encore 2 Write Tablets

Posted on 06 January 2015 by

Pen-driven tablets; They’ve been a staple of the pro-mobile market for many years for some very good reasons and Toshiba just might have the right idea with their new Encore 2 Write 8 and Write 10 tablets. The new tablets use Wacom technology to address a number of important digitizer features that recent tablets have lacked.

Wacom, pressure sensitivity, responsiveness and hover are critical when it comes to quality digitizer input. The ASUS Vivotab Note 8 had a good go at it but it wasn’t perfect. The Surface Pro tablets do a better job but they’re expensive. At $349 for an 8-inch tablet and $399 for a 10-inch tablet the new Encore 2 Write products are unique, if everything works as it should. Hands-on at CES seem to indicate that it does.

The Encore 2 Write tablets are a step up from the low-cost Toshiba Encore 2 tablets and come with 2GB RAM and 64GB SSD. Stereo speakers, micro USB, microSD and headset ports are included and on the 10-inch version you’ll find an HDMI port. (Some sites are reporting that it’s on the 8-inch version too. It’s not. Look at the pics in the gallery.)

The Encore 2 Write tablets come with an 8MP camera which, if it’s as good as the cam on the original Toshiba Encore, should be enough for some good snaps, business cards, whitebooards and the like. Toshiba are including their TruCapture software to help clean-up some of those captures. There’s a GPS included in the package which is going to help put location tags on your notes and images and the sensor pack also includes a digital compass.

A 22.5Wh battery is included in the 10-inch tablet and 15Wh battery is included in the 8-inch tablet. They’re not particularly large batteries but weights seem to be good.  Full specs below.

Included in the deal is 1 year of Office 365 with 1TB storage.

The Toshiba Encore 2 Write 8 and Write 10 deserve a good review, don’t you think?

Screen resolution is 1280 x 800. That aspect seems pretty poor.

Like the look of that folding case on the 8″ model.

  • Chippy – You and I had a Twitter interchange some months ago about UMPCPortal.com implementing a category or some other db function so users could filter to see only pen-enabled products.

Did that happen? If it hasn’t, I’d live to see it. There seems to be nowhere on the web to easily differentiate between pen-enabled tablets. Many write-ups even fail to mention pens.

  • Woot! Thanks for the Touch with Digitizer filter.
