Core M Chromebook rumors…at last!

Posted on 12 February 2015

Chromebooks and Intel’s Core M platform are a perfect fit so it’s no surprise that we’re seeing rumors of a Google Pixel 2 surfacing along with a mention of Core M. The rumors are extremely tenuous but worth a discussion because of three important aspects. Intel Core-M, USB 3.1 and Pixel 2 could define a new range of Chromebooks that are, like the original Pixel, medium to high-end. While Baytrail-M is doing a good job of enabling low-end Chromebooks there are people that truly need higher-end multitasking performance. Combine that power with […]

We changed our logo, because Hong Kong said so!

Posted on 11 February 2015

Brad Linder from Liliputing is out in Hong Kong and he just sent me these pics… Color, BOOM! Offers, BAM! Hand-written signs, BLING!  A great logo…WAIT A MINUTE! Yes its the Ultrabooknews logo being used to sell mobile PCs in Hong Kong. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen my logos being re-purposed but this time I’ve decided to play along.  The old, very old UMPCPortal logo has now changed. As for the advertising, I think we’ll keep it a little cleaner here! Thanks Brad.

Surface Pro 3 hot-desking review.

Posted on 09 February 2015

It was last September when my Ultrabook screen went blank and never came back. I was gutted; Not only because it was my favourite PC but because I was half-way through reporting on the IFA trade-show and I had a flight to the IDF conference 2 days later. Thanks to Intel Germany I flew out with a Surface Pro 3 and the more I use this incredibly well-designed tablet PC, the more I like it. It’s not my main PC though and I thought I would take the time to […]

Acer Switch 12. Order for $649 in US, see reviews from elsewhere

Posted on 05 February 2015

The Acer Aspire Switch 12 – a Core M-based 2-in-1 laptop – is coming, and it starts at just $649.  Promotional and hands-on videos are starting to appear in YouTube. There’s one device I didn’t manage to get a good hands-on with at IDF and IFA last year and that’s the Acer Aspire Switch 12. I wish I had because I’m intrigued having read one of the first reviews, watched a number of videos and having just drafted a piece on hot-desking with the Surface Pro 3.  The Switch 12 weighs […]

YouTube video trading. (Analysing my crappy 108 second, million-view video.)

Posted on 05 February 2015

How did my crappy 108-second 4:3 video earn so much and, more importantly, why did it peak 2-years after it was uploaded? Below is the earnings graph for my best ever YouTube video. It’s 108 seconds long and shot in 640×480 (4:3) on a cheap bridge camera in one-take. I won’t reveal the actual earnings but I will say that it has generated net eCPM at the mid-higher end of what you would expect since I uploaded it at the beginning of 2010. It took me less than 30 minutes to take, make and […]

Windows 10 should have a ‘disable desktop’ option.

Posted on 03 February 2015

For those of us that respect the flexibility of a fully functioning desktop PC in the palm of one’s hand the information, just a tweet, that Windows 10 tablet products under 8-inches will not have desktop capability is bad news. But there are advantages to using an RT-only setup on Windows. There are few sub 8-inch tablets around that will be affected so the new restrictions won’t affect many people but take a look at the industry-focused, Core-i5 Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1. This is a product that relies on the desktop for Win32 desktop apps. […]
