About UMPCPortal.

History.

Carrypad.com was developed from a blog started in Feb 2006, itself the result of a personal quest to find a device that would complement a ‘three device strategy’ – The mobile phone, a desktop PC and the missing component – a ‘Carrypad’. Co-incidentally, Microsoft had been having much the same though and with the introduction of Origami in March the segment was born and Carrypad became very popular as a key reporter and researcher. As products where introduced to the market, details where added to a product database which is now the best UMPC product reference that exists.

In Jan 2007 Carrypad bought and merged the community site ‘Origamiportal’ under a new banner ‘UMPCPortal.com’. Carrypad is now a registered company and UMPCPortal is the customer facing information portal.

Statistics.

During the last year (to March 2008) the portal has grown hugely. We now have over 2000 news articles and over 70 ultra mobile devices in the database. We have a link database that contains 750 of the best external UMPC news, review and video stories and a gallery of over 2000 images taken of ultra mobile devices. We serve over 120,000 unique visitors per month [Google Analytics] and over 0.7 million page views per month. The forum now has over 1800 members and is growing fast.

Advertising and marketing opportunities.

Naturally we offer advertising space on the portal. The front page contains a prime advertising position in the top-right section that is currently open to Google Adwords customers using text advertising. This page currently (Jun 2007) get over 130,000 hits per month and is available for rent on a territorial-targeted basis. Site-wide banner positions attracting over 0.6 million views per month are also available.

For fine-targeting of customers while they are researching, we offer an ad position on every product page. View rates are much lower but in previous campaigns we have seen click through rates that are a minimum 5 times higher than on the front page. 5-10% click through rate represents a very highly primed customer and the conversion rates seen in previous campaigns confirm this. If you wish to advertise against a specific product and even in a specific region, we can offer advertising slots.

We can help with marketing too! Sending your product details for our customers and for inclusion in the database gives you a leg up the search engine ladder. Sending your product for review brings it forward to tens of thousands of people. We’re honest about products but believe that every product has a target customer. Reviews are generally accompanied with videos and two or three lead-up articles on the portal.

UMPC Sales opportunities.

Carrypad is looking to bring its knowledge, search engine ranking and trusted reporting together to give customers a complete shopping solution. We will be selecting devices that we believe in and looking for import and distribution deals. As the shop develops (planned to launch in Q3 2007) we will be looking for high volume distribution deals. Sales will be kept under the Carrypad brand.

UMPC Investment opportunities

2008 will be a big year for UMPCs. The three CPU manufacturers, Intel, VIA and AMD have all announced that they will make CPU’s and chipsets targeted for UMPCs and the result will be a flood of devices. We could see a huge increase in marketing investment. UMPCPortal would like to grow ahead of the curve and we are looking for investors to help us achieve it.
