It’s been about 2-weeks since I last used my daily desktop PC and 2-weeks since I’ve heard that horrible background noise of fan and disk. For the last two weeks I’ve been using a silent, modular, ‘grab and go’ solution based on the Fujitsu U820 UMPC and it’s working out very well indeed. You won’t find many solutions like this out there because this is one of the secrets of the UMPC world that marketing teams and board members get scared about – a multi-scenario device!

JKK has some fun with the BC10C. Remember this is based on an Intel Core CPU (1.3Ghz single core Celeron) and GMA 4500 GPU so its in a different class to the Atom based devices. Watch some of the demos…

Our friend Jenn from Pocketables.net has gotten her hands on the Fujitsu UH900 [Product page] and is wasting no time bringing great coverage of the device to her site. The UH900’s mega-bezel, tiny right shift key, and…

Thanks very much to Mobilx.eu who have sent one of their first Archos 9 devices to us for a week of testing and hands-on. You’ll remember hearing about this earlier in the year and getting a launch at IDF in September but it’s taken a long time to reach the hands of end-users. There are a few early devices out there already but not many hands-on and unboxing videos. Here’s my contribution.

I’ve just uploaded a bunch of images of the Eking S515 including some comparison shots with other UMPCs and slider devices. It’s interesting to see that the original Everun is exactly that same size as the Eking S515

If you’re relatively new to the UMPC scene, the name ‘EKing’ probably doesn’t mean much to you. They arrived on the scene to rescue the failing Wibrain brand and took on production of the i1; an ugly but very productive UMPC. In the last year they’ve also been working on new devices and the S515 [specifications] is one of them.

I want to update you all on the devices I’ve been testing recently. It’s a super range of advanced devices that represent the best in the smartphone, MID and UMPC market. All four are advanced, fun and productive mobile devices.

Here’s an unboxing of the UMPC that might just get an award for ugliest device of the year!
Looks to be more usable than the UMID M1 that we think is based on.

I’ll be back to work on Wednesday but until then I’m taking a break with my family over in sunny (really!) England. Thanks to Three UK I’ve got 3G connectivity both on the smartphone and via my Mifi and it has given me the ability to really test the Nokia N900 [info] and Archos 5 Internet Tablet [info] in real-world mobile and home scenarios that have ranged from a night out with the lads to car-navigation, photography, Skype, sofa and bed-surfing, presence and day-to-day email and website management duties.

The first thing to note from last nights N900 session is that there we didn’t find any show stoppers. Sizing is clearly an issue for some but within the bounds of the size of the device, Nokia have done an incredible job and married it with a software stack that is fit for the next-generation of ‘computing-first’ handhelds for both the geek and consumer community. More notes and videos of the event are available in the full article.

Not only is the browsing speed improved greatly over the previous generation of devices (to bring it up to class-leading speeds) the video payback performance is great too. The quality is the playback on the screen and through the analogue TV-out (PAL, composite) was really impressive.
