VYEPC S18+ with touchscreen Review

So I went the VYEPC route. Data Solutions was my preferred option but with my world trip so close now it was too risky to wait and see if the stock delivery on the Data Solutions SH1 variant was going to be pushed back again.

Starting off with the price. Including delivery (ex VAT) this puppy ran me roughly 915 euro. That was from Laptopsdirect but basically everywhere is selling RRP so you aren’t going to save any by going with one or another. I suppose the bottom line is who do you prefer and who will deliver to your country.

Out of the box and on the table it was well packaged. You really only get the essentials as you can tell from my video review on youtube (linked later). The unit, power cord, battery, manuals, restore cd *shouldnt this be on a usb key considering?*, tablet pen, and a sleeve to put the unit in.

First impressions:

This is an all black unit based on the newer SA1F00H Kohjinsha. Just as the Data Evolutions Cathena CX models are. However VYE have gone so far as to make it a UK keyboard. The keyboard on the "H" variant is VASTLY improved upon the other models, which was a major complaint with the first SH1's to come around. Very responsive (no having to hammer at them) and having played around with the other models can honestly say this ones perfect. Just expect the keys to be a tad smaller anyway... thats what you are buying into after all!

Speed: Does movies, mp3's, office and whatever typical uses you would have very well. Boots quickly (though I havent much on there at the moment) and I would say given its on XP pro probably wipes the floor with its SH6 counterparts on vista... regardless of what tweaking you might do/add ram...

Anyways boils down to preference. I think vistas overkill, not only that but removing vista from the SH6 package would no doubt bring licence costs down and make SH1 and SH6 the same price. Supposedly the new Intel needs vista for tweaks however given the reviews I've seen I expect there are no tweaks for the CPU on the Intel devices... it EATS battery life. Thats my 10 cent...

So the units got touch screen. Works fine. Think maybe a driver update or two are needed. So as to take advantage of better refresh rates that I KNOW this screen can do. Something vye need to expand on with their existing website.

So the CONS:

None that I can see. Ran for four hours straight today whilst doing windows update. Thats impressive battery life.

Does video well

Ok ok... Cons...

Well... they could've given a place to put the stylus. Instead I'm resorting to a bit of string I put together myself

Video. Not as crisp for text as I'd like. Again I'm sure a video/screen driver would correct this and I'll update if thats the case.

Logo. As noted by the review for the VYEPC S37 (SH6 Intel). The logo takes up half the unit.

Advertised incorrect. All touchscreen models are the SA1F00H, an all-black unit. NOT black n silver.

PROS:

Everything. Light. Well constructed. Sleek looking. Good battery life. The improved keyboard. Fast enough to do what you want it to. Price is right. Logo can be covered with a nice transfer. Plenty of good sites doing made to measure high quality vinyl transfers if the logo bugs you. Looking for an SH1.... this is the one to get

i agree that vista should be ditched for xp pro/tablet for the sh6 because vista is slowwwwww and a battery hog

Couple of updates having played around a little bit more.

Pen works fine. Not a tap-tap kinda calibration. Supposed to HOLD the pen where it tells you. My bad. RTFM etc.

There is an updated video driver from Kohjinsha, however it doesnt improve the text quality at above 800*480. I'm waiting to hear back from the guys at vye as this monitor can do better. I know it can. The workaround is 1024*600 at a higher DPI. Which is very viewable and readable. Just would like to see this card/monitor get better drivers support to do that...

Something else I failed to mention. Using your fingers is equally as good as the stylus. Which is nice. Obviously a good quality digitizer I'm very happy all round with this units features.

The acon (tekkon) powerall mp-3450 is another great product. I've left it playing a high quality divx on repeat to see how long it'll last. From a dead vye battery, to charge, to both vye and the acon being dead. At this rate it'll go on all night! Crazy! Again an advantage over the Intel model.

I'm going to do a few word docs on there tonight. But asides from getting used to the smaller form factor keyboard I havent had any issues with typing. Like I was saying before the keys are VERY responsive. Its a vast vast improvement over the other SH1 models. Perfect really...

So bottom line. A 900 euro price tag. A great unit. Great support from vye. Xp pro so not going to lag to all get-out like vista. I'm not even a little dissapointed I didnt go for the S37 800mhz. I'll update again when I find out about a new video driver.

One happy camper

Hi all,

I am considering getting one of these Tekkeon 3450s - but I need to know what it really gives you as far as the Vye S18P is concerned.

The key question is - if my Vye S18P battery has run down and I switch to power from a fully charged Tekkeon 3450, how long will I be able to run my Vye before my power (both 3450 and battery) completely runs out.

If my understanding is correct (may not be!), if I connect a Tekkeon 3450 to a Vye, then it will both power the Vye *and* charge the Vye battery at the same time(??).

So, that would seem to suggest that if I had a flat Vye battery when I connect a Tekkeon 3450, then I would be able to run my Vye:

**until the Tekkoen power runs out, *PLUS* the length of time for my newly recharged (by the Tekkeon) Vye battery to run out***

Is this correct, or have I completely misunderstood.

So, can someone give me some approximate figures therefore on how long I can expect to power my Vye with the Tekkeon.

And if someone knows how long a 6-cell Vye battery would give me that would be great too

Many thanks!
