Next year is looking good already :)

For mobile computing anyway

That should make running Vista an option even for people who are self professed (Mobile) Vista haters (I'm looking at you Steve).

Next year 32GB SSD should be hitting the €100 mark as well making quick page swapping possible on a smaller budget.

Note that this is nothing in performance to the actual 1.87GHz Centrino 2Core.

This is the one without speed stepping, and a GMA950 instead of the power efficient SGX 535. Power consumption will be nothing like as low as the single core unit used in MIDs.

But honestly, I'm excited by this. Hopefully we can get a 7" @ less than 1KG UMPCs with 4 hour plus battery life.

:D :D :P

Actually upon reflection and deeper inspection I feel working on further miniturising or improving graphics chips would be another smart approach to umpc.

Atom seems to be the next ULV and cheap chip on the horizon promising better battery life, but I think now its time to turn to the graphics capabilities.

Look at the benchmarks for the LG C1 compared to other umpcs, it blows them out of the water even higher cpu spec'd machines just from the dedicated graphics card. Lets be honest Vista likes a nice graphics card to play and if we are moving forward with Vista or going forward to the next version of Windows itself a dedicated graphics card/chip is going to be essential.

It seems the Atom will deliver a bit more power and alot more efficiency, lets bring it home by working on the graphics component next.

What'd be interesting to know is how much the power consumption of these chips drops when they aren't working at full load. The big advantage I can see for multicore chips for mobile devices is that you can probably turn off all-but-one core when not doing anything taxing, saving much more power than the current "turn off parts of the CPU not being used" approach. (Of course, this depends on the times you high computation requirements it's coming from multiple processes or threaded programs.)

Diamondville will be sans both SpeedStep and C6 power state.

The problem with having GPU is this. No matter how low power consumption they try to go, there is a limit that's greater than on the CPU.

Theoretically, you can make a Core 2 Duo processing power and make it power down often enough that at idle, the power consumption will be REALLY low. CPUs are not fully utilized lots of times since programs can't take advantage of ILP very well. Graphics however, is much easier to parallelize. The problem with that is unless you want to sacrifice overall performance, there will be a bigger hit making lower power graphics than making a lower power CPU, since GPUs are utilized more often than CPUs are.

With CPUs, you can get 50% of the performance with 90% TDP reduction. With graphics, 50% performance would probably only yield 60-70% savings in power.

Look at it this way. You can keep making it more efficient until it hits the limit, which is 100%. When you are at 100% performance/power efficiency, doubling the performance will yield double the power consumption increase. GPUs are much closer to 100% than CPUs are.

After Silverthorne, we will not see Windows on it anymore. You'll have to hope for ULV chips to go into UMPCs.

I thought Diamondville was going to be 1.6GHz at its highest. If they are going to make a 1.86GHz Dual core wouldn't it mean that it is Silverthorne?

Good point. The problem is I think even developers close to Intel isn't sure yet. The new info is that they will provide 1.87GHz version later, 1.6GHz initially. Very confusing. We'll see.

Looks like the single core 1.87ghz chip will be released initially. It will support hyperthreading and have a 2.4w power envelope.

I don`t have special perspective on these stuff, only hope the rate is going to be cheaper.

Remember, these are somewhat low poewered but mostly cost efficient CPUs designed for low cost mini laptops. We probably won't see these in mids because they are too power hungry and large.

With the new dual versions of the cpu, bigger 11-inch screens, I wonder about the prices.
