Windows 7 7100 is the public Release Candidate version, meaning its basically completed, but not final. I have used it and it's very stable. It's free to download and will work till March 2010 ( final version out later this year to purchase)
I haven't got around to upgrading mine from the beta ver. of windows 7, but the touch screen was perfect for me, I'm sure its the same in the RC version. Download windows 7 RC here... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx |

Faster than Vista or faster than XP? Which Ultra version do you have? Premium? Thanks for letting us know. |

Way faster than Vista, on par with XP. I have the Q1U-P (premium ver.) so i can't vouch for the Q1U, but I am assuming it should work pretty good, much better than Vista does anyway. If you have any issues with the screen calibration on first install, try the steps below. There is actually a Vista TSP Calibration deal under the Q1UP-V's software section. I am assuming this should work for the Q1U as well, since its the same screen hardware? Click here to download it Here's the trick to get it working: 1. Extract the exe file to a folder 2. Run the install.exe 3. Once install completes run "hidcal.exe" from the same folder 4. Run the WriteRegSetup.exe from the same folder 5. Reboot After that the cursor will automatically now be going all the way to the edges of the screen now. If it is not, delete your calibration data in the tablet pc settings of the control panel, and run "9_tabcal.exe" and/or the "25_tabcal.exe" from the same extracted folder. Might need to reboot after this. |

Just installed and its all good, no touchscreen calibration needed and internal modem worked straight away. Liked how all my programmes were also imported as well as firefox bookmarks, only problem was antivirus needed to be reinstalled.

weird, when im on battery power the screen dims to very dark after 30 or so seconds, have to go to power options to make it brighter and then it does it again after another 30 seconds, annoying

The screen dimming is a power saving feature of windows 7. It does this on all 3 computers (HP laptop, Gigabyyte M704, and Gigabyte M912) i have running win7.
Just touch the screen or press a hardware button to restore the brightness to what it was before. Hope this helps. Morganj |

Yes thats what id hope would happen but none of this helps to restore the brightness, I have to go back into the power options and manually slide the brightness switch. |

Have you tried going to the advanced power settings, I know there is a few options in there for dimming and display, I can't check right now but there is settings to disable dimming altogether, set the dimming delay time, and/or the amount of dimming possibly.

Guys who have changed to Windows 7
Have you noticed an increase in battery use, im at least 20% more than Vista. Im reading Aero and the preview window increases the battery use, may have to change some settings, but if the above is the case they eye candy of Windows 7 will be gone Any tips? |

Mikey, I haven't noticed any difference either way, but there should actually be an increase in battery life due to the less hard drive thrashing, and CPU drag in Windows 7 comparing to Vista. It's likely that the changes you made to the dimming is what is changing your battery figures, if you have it set to no longer dim the screen, or to idle much longer before dimming, or even to dim less than what you had in Vista, this will significantly change your battery drain. The screen uses more power than any other component on the Q1U including CPU, HD etc... so any changes to brightness or power settings for screen items, will cause Windows 7 to estimate the remaining time much less. Also you can double check that you are running in balanced or power saver mode, and check the processor's min, and max settings make sure the min is 5% and the max is 100% (for battery & when plugged in). There could be other reasons, like driver issues not allowing certain components for go into power savings mode, or the hard drive is not set to idle after 5 mins (in power settings) etc... |
