I walked into Fry's last night to get a Q1 and the guy said they had just gotten in an updated model with a Pentium M ULV processor, 1Gb RAM and a 60Gb disk. Yeah, I took that one.

I had seen references to the Q1b and Q1P -- some folks had seemed to think the Q1P was a misprint, but I think not.

Yes, a search for "Samsung" on the CDW website now shows 3 Samsung Q1 versions. The original Q1 (MFG#: NP-Q1-V000), a SAMSUNG Q1 9/1.0 60GB 1GB XPT (MFG#: NP-Q1-V002) for $1249.99 and a SAMSUNG Q1B VIA/1.0 40GB 512MB XPT (MFG#: NP-Q1BV000) for 899.99.
No details on the two new units.

Fantastic. And how is it?
Can you confirm its pentium.
What did it cost?

Steve.

Does the Pentium M 1GHz ULV cpu use the same power as the Celeron M 900MHz ULV cpu?
If so, we should not see any difference in battery life between these two models, right?
Unless Samsung has updated the power mangement function of the new Q1.
I suppose we would see a significant boost in the processing performance of this Pentium M over the Celeron M.

The Pentium M supports "speed stepping" so that it can vary its power consumption according to demand on the processor. If it's configured correctly (fingers crossed) it should actually last somewhat longer than the Celeron version while performing the same tasks.

The extra RAM will help battery life a bit too.

I'm glad to see the line extending, even if I'm a bit miffed that Samsung's marketing plan for this seemed to consist of putting it on the shelf and hoping folks would notice!

Thanks for the info. Yes I am familar with the "speed stepping" cpu demand feature in PDAs. Hope to see it in this UMPC.
This all sounds very encouraging. I may go for the new Q1 version with the Pentium M.
I would of liked to see the price down a bit but considering the original is now going for $999.99 I guess the extra $250 for the new model with the better processor, more Ram, and larger hard drive is worth it.
At $1249.99 it still is less than an equivalent TabletKiosk 7210.

I have the Pentium Samsung Q1. I was looking at Fry's and I could not believe my eyes when I saw this. Now, this is a TRUE performing machine. I bought it with my credit card and am selling my Sony ux50 to put the money back on my credit card.

I haven't used it a lot, but I can tell you that I didn't notice that much difference in the speed yet. I was a little disappointed in that aspect. However, when I run a couple programs at once, it doesn't stop the whole tablet.

Battery life for me, even though I set it up at maximum performance, is a great improvement. Once again, I haven't fully tested it yet but can say there is definitely a difference.

Besides the Ram, hd (60 gb..wow) and the processor, they changed the screen a little bit. I noticed that you have to press slighly harder when writing notes; it doesn't just start writing at the slightest touch. This is good, I think, because I used to get unwanted marks on my Windows Journal when I slightly put my pinky on the screen with .0000001 pressure.

That sounds real nice. Wish I had a Fry's near me!
Under normal basic useage I would not expect that much of a performance difference between the 900MHz Celeron M cpu and the 1GHz Pentium M cpu unless you were running a heavy graphic or number crunching application.
Running multiple application simultaneously should show improvement and the upgrade to 1G RAM will also make a difference.
But the noticeable increase in battery life, most likely because of the Pentium M "speed stepping" function, and because of the increase in RAM, is encouraging. The early announcements said up to 60% increase in battery life may be possible.
Did you notice any brightness of the screen?
The Q1b is supposed to have a 30% increase of screen brightness without any additional battery drain. Hopefully this feature made it into the upgraded Q1 with the Pentium also.
Oh yeah....mind if I ask how much Fry's is selling the Q1 with the Pentium for?

Picked up two of these (the Pentium M model) last night at Fry's in Las Vegas, NV. They were the ONLY two in stock. I also purchased the sexy black keyboard. They didn't have any other accessories.

The Unit:

So far, pretty pleased. The resolution scalar works nicely, switching from 800x480 to 800x600 and 1024x600 quite smoothly. The menu button brings up some of the common items like turning on and off the Wired and Wireless lan, Brightness, sound, and the rotation.

The rotation is a bit quirky, as it is just a 90-degree button. After changing from landscape to portrait, you have to click it 3 more times to get it back to normal. NO big, but kinda hokey. Might be configurable, but I haven't found it yet. This isn't a complaint, as it's still a godsend to have.

The dialkeys function is awesome. Takes a bit of getting used to, but it works great. The only thing is that it autohides on its own, and you have to poke around in a menu to reactivate it. The onscreen keyboard functions make up the difference where the DIalkeys might come up short. In any case, all bases are covered as far as entry goes.

The AV Now function is...interesting. It works fine, however as best I can tell, it is still booting into XP, but replacing the shell with their AV app. The concern is that this bypasses login, and allows filesystem access. This will be a problem. :) I'll investigate more, and post later.

The sound quality is decent, and overall usability is fine. I was able to get right around the 3 hours of battery with about half of that using wifi. (It took my first charge to do all of the windows updates!)

Overall, I am very pleased, but if I were to change anything...:

1- Only has a headphone jack. A line in and/or mic jack would've been nice.

2- Can anyone say DOCK! I know, as far as I have seen, most of the others don't have it either. BUt still, this is a no brainer.

3- I wish it had a way to have a hand strap across the back. There is a strap, but it is more like a camera strap, so you can hang this two pound extremely delicate and expensive piece of electronics from your wrist. Umm, no. :)

4- External antenna connection, like an RP-SMA, that kind of thing, with diversity. This way, if there is no external antenna attached, the internal antenna will take over. But, if you screw on a 9db Rubber Duck, it would take over. This would also lend itself well to attaching a cantenna, etc. Ok, I know this one is expecting a bit much, but hey, this IS a wishlist. :)

Ok, I'll be modding that last part in myself.

Don't suppose that any of you know when the updated version is likely to hit the UK? I've been eyeing one of these for a while, but the relatively poor processor and battery life put me off. Now they've brought out the new model I'm very interested.

Hi gadget girl welcome to the forum.

i dont know anything of when the new version of the Q1 is due out, but i've been using the Q1 for about 6 weeks now and very pleased with it. I very rarely use my home pc now and find the battery life on the Q1 not much of a problem. There's many tips and cheats on the forums to improve battery life or you could get the high capacity battery which is available as optional extra. Its also 100 pound cheaper now than what i paid, so its not a bad time to buy. I've managed to get GPS on it now and also connect to internet using my mobile phones modem when no wifi signal is available.

hope this helps.

I just grabbed one of these new ones from my local Fry's as well. I was about to get the older version and just upgrade the memory but this one sounded perfect for me.

Thanks for posting here so I knew to check my Frys.. Sure enough they had it though they are not big on the accessories.

I ordered a Q1 with the Pentium M from www.pcnation.com and it is supposed to ship in about a week. This is in the US.

Thanks for the information. I guess I'll keep scouring online shops until I see one of these!
