Wibrain I1 - quick review

Hey guys,

Yesterday I was lucky enough to receive an I1 sample before we ship it off to a major UK Mobile Network. Ill try and add some snaps, but also run down a few features.

The device is a sample, and as such some features were buggy at best and others not included. For example the camera module was not incorporated. And the WiFi was very weak at best.

The device I have has the following hardware:

CPU: Intel Atom Z520 @ 1.33 Ghz
Memory: 1024 Mb
GFX: IGMA 500
Audio: IDT Audio
HSDPA: Siemens HC25 USB Modem
Wireless: FMD MBH7WLZ1x

The touchscreen driver appears to have been updated, now runs using Jastec Commander 2.00

Another improvement that I really like is the movement of the USB Host to the top of the device, just to the right of the aerial. I was unsure about the aerial myself, but it is very strong and well made, and has a nice "click" when you extend it into place.

The HSDPA modem uses Mobile PhoneTools to initiate connections. The device I had was able to send and receive sms messages too. Although not while using the Internet over 3G.

I will add stuff here as I remember.

Looks good. But when are they releasing this for sale? Glad to see the usb is on top and headphone port near top also.

Will they be selling a version without HSDPA broadband modem?

How's the audio from speakers?

Which drivers were you looking for Steve?

More stuff:

Battery life is around 6.5 hours with wifi or 3g on, Bluetooth is enabled as standard even with the WAN/Wifi switch off. And battery life is around 7.5 + with comms switched off.

The device is a lot cooler. The battery does not heat up, and with a few extra vents, and the Atom chipset, the device never gets anywhere near the heat that the B1 did. Even with the vent on the back covered, which used to cause the B1 to crash.

Anything else Ill add as I remember :P

Hei,
that battery life sounds too amazing to be true. DId you use the standard or the extended battery?
Did you "use" the wibrain while getting these time or was it "just on"?

Thanx for your infos I'm sure now to definetly buy one, i'm just thinking about waiting for the linux version. Does anybody know when the linux version shall be available?

6hrs wifi off sounds easily possible based on the 4hrs wifi-off that the Aigo MID can do with a 10wh battery. (similar Menlow platform)
With screen off and wifi off, expect this to play mp3s for up to 10 hours.

I've tested in Sept and yes, its was looking that good!

Think 'Atom Netbook' and reduce scores by about 30%.
Its at the lowest of the low-end of 3D graphics capabilities.
Maybe a bit more than the old VIA chipset but not much more.

Have you tested 3G yet? I'm wondering how good the reception will be with antenna down and antenna up. If it's got excpeptional 3G reception and exceptional batttery life then its easily the most mobile of XP devices to date.

If it gives more less the same 3d performance of the via B1 I may get it after all, now that Pandora seems to be delayed yet again until 2009 :(

HD vieos on Hulu and Vimeo are in the flash format which, unfortunately, takes huge amounts of CPU power so no, I dont expect this to be able to play HD flash content.

As I understand it though, the GPU includes hardware decoding of Divx, MPEG2/4 and H.264 and can pay these formats back up to 1080i with the right software. The problem is that there isnt much software out there that can hook into the hardware decoding under Windows XP. Under Vista or Windows 7, it should be better for hardware decoding of these formats though.
