Just as we expected, the Dynamism pricing details for the Viliv N5 that we did our Open Review on last night are now available. Dynamism have sent the details over and as with previous Viliv launches, are including a special offer. If you order between July 6th and July 15th you get a free battery worth $50. That’s worth having because the N5 battery is tiny and yet appears to offer 3-5 hours of usage.
As we already know, there are only two models of the N5 available and both are Atom 1.3Ghz based with a relatively fast SSD. The 3G model also has voice capability.
Event Date: July 6th 1PM EST through July 15th
Shipping Date: July 19th and fulfilled based on order date
Promotion: Free spare battery ($50 value)
32GB SSD $649
32GB SSD with 3G $799
Details and pre-order will be up at Dynamism later today.
We would have liked to have seen cheaper pricing of course, especially considering the similar UMID BZ is only $499 but the N5 does look (and perform) slightly better than the UMID BZ. With more RAM and faster SSD it’s more of a multi-tasker and definitely Windows 7 capable. Remember though that there’s no video-out and you only get Windows 7 Home Basic.
JKK and I will continue testing the N5 over the next week or two so keep an eye out for more content from us and if you want to discuss the N5, i’ve opened a new sub-forum. As usual, all the specifications along with links and comparison devices are in the UMPCPortal database.
Unfortunately for everyone out there looking forward to the Archos 9, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. We had been expecting the Archos 9 to be released on October 22nd as we had heard at IDF 09, but we’ve watched that date come and go and been scratching our heads since.
I’ve recently contacted Archos about availability of the Archos 9, and was told that pre-orders made through www.archos.com should be shipping in “early December”. Retail store availability (Amazon, Walmart, etc.) is expected in Q1. That’s all we’ve got to go on for now; sorry for the folks that have been holding out, but hopefully you’ll get your hand on this device before something else comes along and catches your eye!
Slashgear are due to receive one in the UK so i’ll be interested to see news about app. enhancements and any progress on battery life that could turn this into a true all-day MID.
Mobilx have been working hard. Not only have they picked up the UMID and Viliv devices but they’ve just sealed the deal on the E-King S515 tilt/slider UMPC.
It’s the mini tilt/slider form factor that many of us wanted to see when the HTC Shift was around and it’s beaten the similar KAX-15 to the market.
With a similar weight to the UMID M1, one of the lightest UMPCs around, the Eking S515 is one that I really would like to check out further. I’ve had some fingers-on at IDF where it was labeled up as the Digicube Z8. [Hands-on Pics of the Digicube Z8 here] I wasn’t overly thrilled by the build quality and sizing but you’re looking at something that’s powerful and flexible. The 1.2Ghz Atom Z515 CPU will blast through javascript-heavy web-apps like you’ve never seen on your smartphone!
Mobilx are listing the base (non-3G) version with a 16GB SSD for 478 Euros and with an additional 3G module for 536 Euros. These prices are without operating system. From previous dealings with this device we think it has 512MB RAM which means that you’re limited to XP Home or a special Linux build. It’s such a shame that Moblin 2.1 for handhelds isn’t ready yet as a tailored build of that with support for the touchscreen would have been really interesting. I wonder if someone can slip us a copy of the version we saw running on the Aigo at IDF?
Specifications are a bit sketchy at the moment as we’re seeing sizings of 4.3” and 5.0” and resolutions of WVGA and SWVGA but those specifications will be ironed out in just a few days when Mobilx receive their first sample device. Lucky for us, that sample device will be heading to UMPCPortal where the obligatory live session will be held! Expected early next week.
I’ve just had a press release from Archos in Germany which reminds me that the Archos 9 is going to be available from tomorrow.
In the press event at IDF last month we learned that the Archos 9 would launch in the U.S. for $499 but it but we couldn’t confirm EU availability and price. The press release today confirms that it will be available in the Archos online shop [German version] from tomorrow for 499 Euro.
Two additional ‘supermodel’ versions will also be available. The first will have a DVB-T receiver built-in and the second, a 3.5G module. No pricing has been released for these.
The Archos 9 has been one of the top products in the portal since we reviewed it at IDF last month so clearly there’s a lot of interest in it. We’re trying to get hold of a review model from U.S. and E.U. offices and hope to bring you a live session / review very soon. In the meantime, have a look at my overview video and check out the full specifications along with other Archos 9 content on the product page.
