Sony Vaio 11 Pro 2

4th-Gen Intel Core increases efficiency which reduces the need for large heatsinks, fans and even large battery modules. The new SoC available for Ultrabooks also reduces mainboard size so what you end up with is the possibility to make something like this. The Sony Vaio Pro 11 weighs under 1KG and looks amazingly think for a touchscreen Ultrabook. Details and video below.

The Ultrabook on 4th-Gen Core – More Definition Now Available

keynote 1 CollageIntel released some 4th-Gen Core Ultrabook definition last week and today, following the official launch of 4th-Gen Core (Haswell) and the Computex Keynote (round-up here), Intel have published more information.

Ultrabooks with screen sizes less than 14” need to be 20mm or less. WiDI 4.1 is included on every Ultrabook along with touch, an array mic, 6 hours of HD media playback and security features but surprising to us is the inclusion of Thunderbolt on all Ultrabooks with the 4th-Gen Core.  We’re trying to get clarity on this Thunderbolt requirement (what about models that get a 4th-Gen Core refresh for example?) and we’ll update when we hear back from Intel.

Update: The requirement for Thunderbolt is an error in the PDF. Intel confirmed that in terms of connectivity, at least one USB3.0 is required. Thunderbolt is an option.

The following is a re-formatted copy of the press release available here. (PDF)

Computex Day Zero UltrabookNews Round-Up

computex windows 8 ultrabooks

And just like that, inside 12 hours, the Ultrabook market was turned on its head. I’m looking back at the HP Envy 6t that we put in the database this morning and thinking wow!, I wonder if anyone’s going to buy an Ultrabook before Windows 8 launches. What happened at Computex today was exciting, but a little worrying. Hopefully we’ll be back to current-day Ultrabooks on Day 1 at Computex.

Jonney Shih Presents the ASUS TaiChi at Computex

shih taichiJonney Shih is getting somewhat of a name for himself in tech PR circles. He comes across as honest, likable, passionate and funny and his presentation of the ASUS TaiChi was as good as any of his stage appearances. We wish we had been there! The presentation wasn’t without it’s problems, but that’s what we like about them.

It’s worth a look. We’ve added it to a playlist below where you’ll be able to watch a number of ASUS TaiChi videos from Computex today.

What do you think about the TaiChi? Is it workable? Expensive? A PR stunt?
