HTC Shift for $200 – Take a piece of Design History!

Tags: ,

The HTC Shift. A fantastic design that failed due to overly heavy operating system, a short battery life, low screen resolution and limited Windows Mobile implementation.

Over a year of rumors and false-starts the HTC Shift became the most viewed device on UMPCPortal by a long shot. Videos of it were always popular and even after it launched, communities grew quickly and great things were done with the device. The short battery life and high cost killed it in the end through and as smartphones took off and even due to Intel moving towards the MID, it lost ground quickly.

Still, it’s an amazing bit of engineering and there might even be a few use case left for it. Certainly a 30 minute session in the coffee shop could be worth a lot of fun and a few discussions!

At $199 it’s worth a but of fun and maybe worth trying some Ubuntu, ChromeOS or other lightweight OS. Unfortunately this isn’t the 3G version. Anyone up for it? Or maybe you’re waiting for the updated version?!

Is the CrunchPad the next HTC Shift?

Does anyone remember the excitement about the HTC Shift that resulted in a series of total showstoppers that caused it to fade quickly from public view?  Battery life, screen resolution and (slow) operating system were my personal deal-breakers and if there’s one thing I’ve learnt from 3 years of product blogging it’s that people are very quick to get excited about a product en masse but when it comes to the crunch, there’s often a show stopper that kills interest, en masse.

cpgraph

The Crunchpad has been at number 1 in the UMPCPortal charts for about a month now and because we’re not particularly highly ranked for Crunchpad search terms it indicates that there’s rather a lot of traffic out there for it. In fact if you look at Google Trends you see that searches for Crunchpad are in the same ballpark as for the terms ‘UMPC’ and the popular UMPC brand ‘Viliv.’

cptrends

The Crunchpad is clearly getting a good number of eyes and if it’s well executed it should sell well but the lessons of the HTC Shift have to be remembered. Battery life and operating system are the two main issues here.

Two years ago we wanted a 3hr minimum battery life on our portable devices. Now, that expectation is up to 5hrs which is going to be a tough call. It is possible with a well engineered Menlow-based design (probably not with a typical netbook-platform design) but then there’s the issue of software. Creating an end-user Linux build is extremely hard work. Whatever OS is chosen though, if Firefox takes more than 7 seconds to open and page loads average more than 10 seconds, its ‘slow.’ The iPhone 3GS is in the 10-15 second range for average page load times now so there’s no excuse for slow page loads.

Finally there’s the price. Mike Arrington, the owner of the company has set a lot of expectations down at the $200-$300 level so if he misses that target by much he’s lost a lot of momentum. With well-built 8.9” 1KG Asus 900’s going for under $200 there’s a lot of competition.

I would love to see the Crunchpad succeed and for thousands of people to have a portable touch-based web solution available but I worry about the lessons we all learned from the HTC Shift.

HTC Shift extended Battery from Mugen.

I recall seeing this solution a while back on JKKMobile but Paul from MoDaCo has now got one for testing. Its a 47Wh battery pack for the HTC Shift from Mugen which should allow about 5hrs online time thus solving one of the HTC Shift’s biggest problems. It’s a tidy solution but at nearly $240, it’s a huge amount to pay for 5 hrs of computing time.

Paul is doing further testing and will report back on performance soon.

Pocketables. HTC Shift = Favourite UMPC.

I knew Jenn liked the HTC Shift but I didn’t know she liked it that much!

It’s so easy, so versatile, and so much fun to use that I officially declare the HTC Shift X9500 as my hands-down favorite UMPC. It is the fifth UMPC I’ve purchased, the thirteenth UMPC I’ve reviewed/extensively used, and the one I like best.

Yes, Vista performs relatively smoothly on the HTC Shift and there’s no question about its looks. It’s a design beauty. The form factor is hands-down the most flexible you can purchase on the market today (and that includes all notebooks!) the quality of the 3G in terms of both reception and availability is second-to-none and I do agree, the case is the best I’ve ever seen on a mobile device. Viewers on the portal tend to agree too. It’s still at number 5 in the ‘charts’ after over a year and an amazing 132,000 individuals have viewed the product page nearly 200,000 times!

But 2-hours battery life Jenn. Is this a house pet?

I’ve laboured over the thought of owning an HTC Shift a number of times but I hate the thought of compromising on my Q1 Ultra 6-hours battery life, XP efficiency and 1024×600 screen but I would love to have the form factor back in my hands again. Here’s looking forward to a 1.8Ghz Atom Silvethorne-based HTC Shift 2 with 1024×600 screen and a minimum of 3 hours battery life. For that, I’d happily pay over 1000 Euros and possibly write as many articles about the device as Jenn has about the HTC Shift!

Give up my HTC Shift? Never! – Pocketables.
