Viliv N5 UMPC – Full Review

Tags: , , , , ,

The tech blogs of the western world are literally full of Slate, pad and tablet talk. ‘Smart’ this or ‘App-store’ that; There’s nothing like a new and controversial product category to get traffic flowing. Meanwhile, sitting in the background and  forming a nuclear part of the handheld category of computing devices are the UMPCs that have been serving pro-mobile, industry and education users for many years. Consumers generally aren’t interested in a device targeted at getting work done while on the move but maybe that will change with the smooth-looking Viliv N5 which is meeting many of our expectations and could teach the ‘pads’ a few tricks too.

Viliv N5 specifications, discussion, links, videos and images in the community specifications page.

First five minutes.

I could almost copy and paste the ‘first five minutes’ overview from the Viliv S5 because it was almost the same. In fact the packaging was even better this time round. It’s a shame there was no case included but the unit itself more than makes up for that. It has velvety smooth black rubberized plastic, rounded edges, an extremely clean look all over (the slab battery slots in and forms the back of the unit) and on opening the unit you’re pleased at the feel of the keyboard as you instinctively give it that mock thumbing action. Taking the Windows 7 and Intel Atom stickers off improves the look (as always!) but exposes the huge frame that exists around the 5” screen. Its somewhat disappointing to see so much unused space on either side of the screen.

Open Review Videos.

We often record a live, open review of devices and the Viliv N5 was no exception. in 2hrs with JKKMobile and a hundred or so more people interacting live via a chat session we went over the device and exposed the good and bad. All the videos from the live session are available, unedited, here. Check back regularly on UMPCPortal and Carrypad for news about more live sessions.

We also have an N5 review video available on YouTube.

Specifications

The Viliv N5 is based on the Intel Menlow platform that includes the Z520 Atom CPU at 1.3Ghz and the ‘Poulsbo’ chipset which includes a GMA 500 GPU and video decoding hardware. It runs Windows 7 Home Starter operating system.  On the review model we had a 32 GB SSD and 1GB of RAM. There’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the GPS module, stereo speakers, a 1024×600 glossy, LED-backlit resistive touchscreen and a built-in 3G module to make the device truly mobile. The battery is a slim 16wh unit.

Full specifications can be found on the product page.

From the outside.

As mentioned above, the N5 is a very clean and stylish looking unit with a rubberized plastic finish and a shaped slab-battery that forms the rear of the device in a very similar way to the old OQO Model 02 that the N5 could be compared with. All ports except the headphone port are covered which again helps to make the device look clean. In the hand, the N5 suffers from being rather dense. It is, of course, lightweight coming in at 400gm / 14oz but due to its size, feels like a solid package. The comparable UMID BZ is noticeably lighter. If its anything like the Viliv X70 though, it will be due to strong casing. Only time will tell on that but checking the hinge and hearing from Viliv that the screen is covered with a hardened glass seems to confirm it. Opening the device could be easier though and the hinge does seem to be a bit tight.

Don’t expect the full range of netbook-style ports on the N5. Although you’ve got a USB, headphone and microSD slot, there’s no Ethernet and importantly, no analogue video out. It’s a surprise omission from a device that could have been a real Swiss-army knife for traveling salespeople. A USB-VGA dongle is the only option if you want to use the N5 to show presentations. The 3G SIM card slot (connecting to a 5.6/7/2 Mbps and voice-capable Huawei EM 770W) is located behind the battery. Voice capability is included and working. SMS capability is also included in the Mobile Partner software.

The rubberized plastic finish is relatively resistant to finger grease but you’ll still need to carry a cloth if you want the device to remain smudge-free.

Viliv N5 Launch Event, Pricing, Availability at Dynamism

Tags: , , , ,

viliv_n5_4m_1_1 Just as we expected, the Dynamism pricing details for the Viliv N5 that we did our Open Review on last night are now available. Dynamism have sent the details over and as with previous Viliv launches, are including a special offer. If you order between July 6th and July 15th you get a free battery worth $50. That’s worth having because the N5 battery is tiny and yet appears to offer 3-5 hours of usage.

As we already know, there are only two models of the N5 available and both are Atom 1.3Ghz based with a relatively fast SSD. The 3G model also has voice capability.

Event Date:             July 6th 1PM EST through July 15th
Shipping Date:         July 19th and fulfilled based on order date
Promotion:              Free spare battery ($50 value)
32GB SSD                $649
32GB SSD with 3G    $799

Details and pre-order will be up at Dynamism later today.

We would have liked to have seen cheaper pricing of course, especially considering the similar UMID BZ is only $499 but the N5 does look (and perform) slightly better than the UMID BZ. With more RAM and faster SSD it’s more of a multi-tasker and definitely Windows 7 capable. Remember though that there’s no video-out and you only get Windows 7 Home Basic.

JKK and I will continue testing the N5 over the next week or two so keep an eye out for more content from us and if you want to discuss the N5, i’ve opened a new sub-forum. As usual, all the specifications along with links and comparison devices are in the UMPCPortal database.

Again, thanks to everyone that joined in with the Viliv N5 [information] Live Open Review session tonight. Through pure perseverance I got my N5 from Fedex at the Cologne airport today [Note: Don't try and pick something up from there unless you have two hours, passport, vehicle registraion docs and want all the posessions in your car to be scanned!] and we did a good 2.5hrs of testing with hundreds of visitors via the live session over Ustream. It was a live unboxing for me so my first impressions will come later this week but in the meantime, here are the live recordings we produced.

Update: All videos now available on YouTube.

Part 1 – Unboxing Overview. (12 mins)

Part 2 – JKK Overview, Video performance, Q&A (30 Mins)

Part 3 – Further testing and Q&A including summary. (43 Mins)

First things first, Pocketables have a full review of the Viliv N5 up. They seem to be very happy with the device although there’s confirmation that there’s no video-out port. It’s been blanked-off. Click-through for the full review.

After you’ve read the review, don’t forget that despite the high possibility that my N5 won’t turn up in time, JKKMobile is getting his and we’re planning a live session. This will happen today (Monday 28th) at 2130 CEST (1230pm San Francisco. Other times here.) on the UMPCPortal and JKKMobile live channel.

Update: Live review is finished now but the recordings are available.

Specifications, information, images and links for the Viliv N5 here.

There will be a live video and audio feed along with a chat channel for questions and discussions. I hope you can make it. I hope my Viliv N5 can make it too! If not, my UMID BZ will be there as a comparison. We’ll try and include comparison thoughts about the UH900 too.

We will try to record the main part of the session.

See you on the live channel and follow/check here for any late announcements/updates.

Update: Live review is finished now but the recordings are available.

German Customs / FedEx Holds Up Viliv N5 – For ‘2-3 weeks’ Update: It’s free!

Tags: ,

Update: Thanks to Timelock’s comment below, it looks like we’ve managed to shake the N5 free of customs although the timing was strange. It cleared customs before I sent a copy of my customs-number form. Maybe all the calls, faxes and emails helped in the end. The N5 should be with me for the live session tonight. Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and tips.

Update: I have the N5 and the Live review is finished. The recordings are available.

Can you believe this. I’ve been receiving goods from abroad for nearly 5 years; I’ve been paying the taxes when asked, filling in the forms when asked and generally being a good boy. Then a new FedEx office  in Cologne opens and everything comes to a halt. The Viliv N5 has arrived there and I now have to register as an importer in order to release the device. It’s going to take weeks.

To be fair, FedEx are following the rules. If you, as a company, import more than three items per year (receiving zero-value goods for testing is also counted as importing) then you have to register for a customs number and EORI number. [If anyone has experience on the subject and knows a solution, please drop a comment below.]

The problem is that this is Germany and while processes work, there’s never a work-around, never an alternative and the process is often as slow as an old dog. Currently, the customs office in Dresden are taking 2-3 weeks to process new number requests. Meanwhile, FedEx holds on to devices for 4 days before sending them back.

The N5 is one of the most important UMPC products of 2010 and I have thousands of customers waiting to see the device, hear opinions on the device and have the unique chance to join in our live Q&A session on the device. There are others that will get the device too (Tip: Head on over to JKKMobile who is also getting the Viliv N5 and will start work with it on Monday. We’re still planning to run a live session on Monday evening) but if you know anything about running a blog as a business, being late with important product reviews is not the best strategy.

I’ll do my best to highlight the issue to Dresden but you know what, if England win against Germany on Sunday, you can probably kiss goodbye to the N5 for a while!!!!

What we know so far: Check out the Viliv N5 information page.

Update: I have the N5 and the Live review is finished. The recordings are available.

Viliv N5 hands-on from jkkmobile

Tags: , , , ,

n5 Jkk sounds really excited to be checking out the upcoming Viliv N5 that was recently announced, saying that he feels confident that this is “the UMPC that we’ve all been waiting for”. He has a quality 5 minute video looking around the hardware of the device. Jkk estimates a few weeks until the N5 will be available, but at this point there isn’t anything official about pricing or release dates. He also mentions that there will be an 800×480 low-end version in addition to the 1024×600 model that he plays with in the video. Jump over to his site to see the hands-on, and I’m sure Chippy will be having a look at this as well to give you his impressions.

Viliv announces the N5, gets a bit more official with the S10, and upgrades the entire line to Windows 7

s10 It feels like we’ve known about the S10 Blade [Portal page] for a long time now, but we’ve yet to see any official pricing. It looks like that may come to an end soon as Viliv has just put out a press release with official specifications (but still no price):

  • Intel® Atom™ processor Z530 (1.6GHz) / Z550 (2.0GHz)
  • Windows® 7 Home Premium
  • 10.1″ HD LCD (1366 x 768, WXVGA) / Swivel / Multi-Touch [Me: probably resistive]
  • SSD capacity: 32GB, 64GB, 128GB
  • 1GB DDR2 SDRAM 533Mhz
  • WiFi IEEE 802.11b/g

  • Camera
  • 2 USB Host, 1 USB Slave
  • SDHC, Headphone-out, Mic, Stereo Speakers
  • D-Sub, Multi I/O(Composite / Component / S-Video)
  • Keyboard : 84keys total (Function 34keys)
  • 10 hours max battery life (7 hour movie playback)
  • Dimensions:  260(W) x 185(L) x 17~26(H)mm / 10.23(W) x 7.28(L) x 0.67~1.02(H)inch
  • Weight: 1.21Kg / 2.67 pounds

I wrote a little while back that the S10 could really put Viliv on the map, but at this point I feel like they’ve waited too long. We now have $300-$400 netbooks which are relatively powerful as they are equipped with Nvidia ION. The S10 will definitely beat out most of the competition with 10 hour battery life, and it has a lot of great connectivity options. It’ll be competitive at the right price, and certainly a good pro-mobile choice, but it could have done some serious work in my opinion if they got it out the door a few months ago.

viliv N5 (1) In addition to S10 specs, we see a whole new device from Viliv, the N5 [Portal page]. They are calling it a “MID” but it’s a mini-laptop form-factor device, similar in appearance to the Sony Vaio P (the top of the N5 says “Ultra Mobile Mini PC” but don’t look for UMMPCPortal.com any time soon). It’s extremely light at 399 grams (0.88 pounds) and appears to have a very HP Mini 1000-esque keyboard. Check the specs:

  • Intel® Atom™  processor Z520 (1.33 GHz)
  • Windows® 7 Starter / Home Premium
  • 4.8” WSVGA (1024×600) with Touch Screen
  • 32GB SSD
  • 1GB DDR2 SDRAM 533Mhz
  • WiFi IEEE 802.11b/g
  • Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
  • HSPA/TD-SCDMA/EVDO/WiMAX Connectivity options
  • GPS Sirf Star3
  • 1.3M Pixel Camera
  • Optical Mouse
  • 1 USB Host, 1 USB Slave
  • Micro-SD, Headphone-out, Mic, Stereo Speakers
  • QWERTY keyboard 63keys total (Function 34keys)
  • Up to 5 hours of battery life
  • Dimensions:  172(W) x 86(H) x 25(T)mm / 6.77(W) x 3.38(H) x 0.98(T) inch
  • Weight:  399g / 0.88 pounds

Viliv is also apparently updating all devices (X70, S5, S7, and the upcoming S10 and N5) to Windows 7. Chippy is on the CES2010 floor as we speak and should have a hands on with these devices soon! Full press release text below.
