Long term hardware impressions — HP Mini 1000 MIE

Posted on 26 February 2009

I think I definitely saved the best for last. The HP Mini 1000 is a beautiful unit by anyone’s standards. Combine that with the fact that you can buy a version of the Mini 1000 MIE direct from HP starting at $280, and you should be impressed. Take a look at the hardware tour: Left (left to right): A/C plug, USB 2.0, vents, HP accessory connector, standard headphone jack, ethernet port (covered by rubber flap). Front: Power slider, HDD/battery LED indicators, wireless slider. Right: SD slot, USB 2.0, recessed USB […]

Intel calls iPhone a MID. Obviously Preparing for Moorestown Marketing.

Posted on 26 February 2009

I enjoyed this article at APCMag. There’s a lot you can read between the lines and a lot of straight-up info. Intel are now calling smartphones, MIDs There’s a definite netbook roadmap It will take 3-5 years to seed MIDs on Intel Some netbooks may appear on the Moorestown platform Favorite quote: “Every smartphone is a mobile Internet device, including the iPhone inch says Pankaj Kedia, director of ecosystems for Intel’s Ultra-Mobile Group. “If the device is mobile, if it delivers a rich internet experience and has a targeted usage, […]

Long term software impressions — HP Mini 1000 MIE

Posted on 25 February 2009

It has definitely been an interesting testing experience with the Mini 1000 MIE [Portal page]. The netbook, as you have probably read, runs a custom Ubuntu interface designed by HP. They call it the Mobile Internet Edition of the Mini 1000. I am anything but a Linux pro, so I approached this as a newcomer to Linux. Luckily, HP is marketing the Mini 1000 MIE to less experienced computer users and not Linux pros. I gave you my initial software impressions not too long ago, but I’m ready to give […]

What ever happened to WePC?

Posted on 25 February 2009

Back in October of last year there was some interesting news about a site (WePC.com), made in conjunction with Intel and Asus, that would allow users to submit concepts of their ‘dream computer’ and have it voted on by a large community. The idea was that the best concepts would float to the top and Asus would take these and build a community designed netbook, while Intel would power it. I took another look at the site today to see if we had made any progress, but from what I’ve […]

Performance — HP Mini 1000 MIE

Posted on 25 February 2009

I’ve been testing the HP Mini 1000 MIE [Portal page] netbook for a few weeks now and I’m ready to give some performance information. As you’ll recall, the ‘MIE’ in Mini MIE stands for Mobile Internet Edition. This is HPs way of denoting their custom Ubuntu operating system which runs in place of a typical Windows OS. Unfortunately, because of the OS on the unit I can’t bring you the typical benchmarks. Luckily some benchmarks are already available out on the web from the XP versions which should give you […]

3-years ago. A Look Back at the Origami Buzz.

Posted on 24 February 2009

NOTE. This article was written in 2009. Three years ago today, Microsoft’s Origamiproject.com went live as a teaser website. [See original teaser page] One of the people to spot it was ‘Designtastesgood‘ who appears to have lit the fuse by sending a link to Robert Scoble who effectively posted another teaser. Engadget’s editor-in-chief at the time, Ryan Block, picked it up, added an image he’d acquired and wrote an article that evening which has 190 comments on it. If you have time, scan through them! “So today Microsoft officially flipped […]

Viliv S5 Pre-Orders Sold Out in 15 minutes. Review Information.

Posted on 24 February 2009

According to the MyViliv website and some information we received by email, 1000 units of the Viliv S5 were sold in 15 minutes today as the pre-orders started in Korea. Viliv have been selling PMPs and other devices since 2005 and they tell us they’ve achieved the highest website statistics ever through the S5 launch. That’s impressive considering the financial problems going on in the worlds tomorrow but it’s possibly indicative of people wanting to make a money-saving purchase as the Viliv S5 can serve as multiple devices. Navigation, PMP, […]

Netbook price cuts Signals Dramatic Change in Netbook Market.

Posted on 24 February 2009

Alarms bells are ringing here. The netbook boat is said to be strong and yet it might already be taking on water if what I think is happening is true. Sascha spotted an Acer Aspire for a (converted) 150 Euros in Taiwan recently ($195) and speculates that there’s a price war going on. Quite how you can gain an advantage on price where there are no profit margins beats me and as a result, I can’t help but think that resellers are shifting stock before sales dry up or buying […]
